Report No 12

Monday 18 September
It was a pleasure to welcome our District Governor, Ray Herbert, and his wife, Deirdre, as well as ADG Judy Beasley to our meeting. It was also great to see five partners there.
The board met with DG Ray prior to the club meeting and he was pleased with the progress of our club. The only point for improvement is to get our statistics updated in ClubRunner.
Please can each member log in and make sure your personal profile is up to date - especially your age and gender. These member details are needed for Rotary assess district statistics.

District Conference 2018
The conference will be held from 6-8 April 2018 at Mount Gambier Civic Centre. Let's all plan to go!
Our club will be asked at this conference how we are "Making a Difference"

President Elect
President Elect Trevor Pickles was presented with his badge of office by DG Ray.

 Special General Meeting
A quorum was present and Resolution 1 "That the club adopt the Rules, contained in the Rules tabled at the meeting, in substitution for the Club's existing Rules" was unanimously approved.
Resolution 2  "That the club adopt the Bylaws tabled at the meeting  in substitution for the Club's existing Bylaws" was also unanimously approved.

Friday 13th October
1. Please let Greg Plumridge know if you would like to attend the dinner dance/ auction hosted by RC Grovedale Waurn Ponds. He is trying to book a table.
2. Also on that date, our club is providing a BBQ for the Peace of Mind Brain Cancer Retreat at 5pm. Please let Mal Slater know if you would like to help with that.

Collection of Toiletries for East Loddon
There will be a box at meetings for your donation of goods each week. These need to be new items and not hotel samples please.
There will also be a collection box at Richard's shop, LET Surfcoast,  5/15 Bell Street. Please ask your friends and family to support this initiative too.

District Governors Visit

DG RAY HERBERT
DG Ray congratulated our Club on the Rotary difference we are making with our projects such as the Motor Show, Book Fair and Strathewan Beach Day and spoke about the importance of service though running various projects.
He impressed on us the focus this year on recording our volunteer hours on Club Central as RI President Ian Risely wants to be able to track the overall work that Rotarians around the world contribute. Hours spent on humanitarian projects is now more importance than attendance, which was the main measure for Rotary's success in the past.
When we all work on projects together we can make a much greater difference in the world. We will arrange to plant trees in Torquay to add to the total goal of more than 1.2 million trees to be planted by Earth Day on 22 April - one for every Rotarian.

It was great to have DG Ray on hand to be able to present Trevor Pickles with his President Elects badge for the coming year.

Deirdre has chosen "End Trachoma 2020" as her DG Partner's Program for this year. The program is being led by the Rotary Club of Melbourne but all clubs are asked to donate to the cause to end blindness in Indigenous children caused by trachoma. Soap Aid (recycling used soaps) will also contribute to this program so he was pleased that we will be participating.
He announced that Jazz and James Morrison will be key attractions at the District conference so we are encouraged to attend and show how the Rotary Club of Torquay is "Making a Difference".

Brownlow Night - 25th Sept

Brownlow Football Night

Monday 25 September 2017

This is a football themed night so dress in your club colours or dress to impress.  At this stage we have arranged a guest speaker from the Torquay Football Club (2017 Premiers) so you should be entertained.

This is a PARTNERS INVITED NIGHT so please book your partners in by 12 noon on Friday 22 September 2017 ph: 5222 2022.  Please feel free to invite your friends (you just need to remember to book them in). We need the numbers early so Lorraine can arrange the catering however late bookings will be accepted.

The final program has not been resolved but it will include an individual trivia challenge to find our very own "football genius" for 2017 (no phones allowed), maybe a green carpet walk  for the best dressed and a Brownlow tipping contest (download entry form).

Also if everyone can bring one piece of football memorabilia (or more if you wish) it will add to the event.

We need some football decorations for about 5 tables so if we have any volunteers please let me know or if anyone has any ideas for the evening please give me a call.

It won't be a late night (finished by 8:00pm) because we will want to get home to watch the Brownlow.

East Loddon Food Share Program - YOUR HELP IS NEEDED

s
Two weeks ago  we were given an insight to the tough conditions many farmers and rural communities face, which can often be for many consecutive years. Leanne Welsh is one of these who lives at East Loddon just north of Bendigo and is the current President of the East Loddon Food Share Program. You will recall that Leanne informed us of the work performed by The East Loddon Food Share Program (ELFS Program)
The Program provides emergency food, personal toiletries and basic household items to families and individuals who are suffering as a result of extreme circumstances.
Extreme circumstances can strike anyone at any time. Natural disasters, such as drought or bushfire, have an enormous impact on
the day-to-day lives of people living within the effected zone. Similarly, illness or an unexpected loss of income, can place people
in a sudden and very difficult situation.

Last week your Board discussed just how our club could offer support to the ELFS Program taking into consideration that
  1. We are only just entering the BBQ fundraising seasons so our fundraising account is rather lean.
  2.  Until we conclude our Motor Show and Book Fair which are our two greatest fundraisers
.....we are not really in apposition to offer financial support to the ELFSP . However one way we can help is to collect personal toiletries for both men and women which we can pack into "Shoe Boxes" for the families to be distributed by the ELFSP.

Richard and Sharon Mierzejewski have offered their business LET Surf Coast at  Shop 5/15 Bell St Torquay to be the collection point for donated products. Please spread the word amongst your friends and family. We will also be seeking some publicity of the project in the Surf Coast Times.

Dinner Meeting Registration & Apologies

MEETING APOLOGIES - What do I do?

Notifying someone about changes to your meeting attendance is your responsibility!

Our meetings have catered dinners, so if you are unable to attend a meeting, or if your partner is unable
to attend a designated Partner's Night, YOU MUST ADVISE us of your or your partner’s absence.
This also applies if you are attending the meeting but not dining.

There are two ways to do this, either record the information in advance in the "Apology Book"
that is available at the check in table at each meeting or telephone 03-5222-2022.
An answering service operates out of hours.
  • All apologies must be made no later than 9.00AM on the Monday of the meeting (unless other arrangements
  • were addressed in the Bulletin).
  • If no apology is recorded by that time, the absentee member will be issued with an invoice to pay the Club the
  • usual dinner fee of $25 for your non-attendance, and/or that of your partner if it is an official Partner's Night.

  • On "Partners Nights" it is a different arrangement as it will be assumed that your partner WILL BE attending unless you apologise for them!
Remember if you are bringing guests or your partner (to a non-partner night) you need to notify us of the extra number of persons who will be attending.

Absence when away on travel is not an excuse.  It is your reasonability to lodge your apology and it is recommended that this
be recorded beforehand in the “Apology Book” to save you remembering each week whilst you are away.
