Presidents Report No 32

From the President

Hello everyone
Congratulations and well done to everyone involved in our Motor Show on Sunday.  It was a huge day for us and for Torquay, and so good to see the cars and the crowds.  Financially, it was also very successful.  As you know, this is a vital part of our overall fund raising, and something of a relief when the weather allows all the planning to be put to good use.
Congratulations to the Motor Show committee for the impeccable organizing again this year.  Thank you to all members and friends who helped out.

Rotary Friendship Exchange with D3053 India
D9780 is hosting a Friendship Exchange with D3053, India.  Their visit commences on April 28, 2017 and goes until 13 May.  Hosts are being sought for seven couples. This is an excellent opportunity to share with other Rotarians from another country. Contact gail@portlandseaview.com.au for more information or if you’d like to get involved.

Ride the Bellarine – Sunday April 9, 2017
I know Greg will be updating us often as Ride the Bellarine gets closer, so this is just an early notice from me about this important event, raising funds for the End Polio campaign.  All 15 Clubs in Geelong and District have pledged their support and will provide riders, teams, sponsorships and marshalls, so please get ready to be involved.

Kithbrooke Park Country Club needs a bus driver
Kithbrooke Park Country Club is situated a few kilometres out of Torquay (cnr Grossmans & Ghazeepore Rds) and is seeking the services of a casual bus driver for runs into Torquay 4 times a week and twice weekly to Waurn Ponds and Geelong.  A current Endorsed Licence would be an advantage as we have a 22 seater Toyota Coaster as well as an 8 seater Hyundai people mover.
Hours work per week = Mon + Fri  1h 45m Tue + Thu 4h 45m (no service on Wednesday) Total:  8h 15m. May even suit 2 people who alternate week on week off.
If anyone is interested in finding out more just call our newest member Kelly on 5261 9988 or email info@kithbrookepark.com.au

District Conference registrations - and we’re doing breakfast on Sunday 2 April
BE Bold and register for the District Conference here. Mike will also be seeking assistance to work on the BBQ on the Sunday morning of the conference as, along with Geelong East Rotary Club, we are providing breakfast to everyone who is attending the hands on project at Geelong Mums.

41st Annual Easter Art Show – Drysdale
Once again the Rotary Club of Drysdale will present their annual Art Show at Christian College Bellarine Sports Stadium in Drysdale on Easter Saturday, 15/4/17 and Easter Sunday 16/4/17.  Admission, including catalogue $8; concession $6; children under 12 free.

Update on Global Grant 1745092

Clean Water in Cambodia – Great News

On February 1st 2017 our Global Grant to provide clean water to communities and schools in Cambodia was approved.  The project was approved to the amount of $US58,489.

We were approved to provide 12 water wells with pumps, 5 rain water collection systems and one bio-sand filter system.

I am currently in Cambodia so was able to immediately initiate a series of meetings with our colleagues in the Rotary Club of Phnom Penh and with the cooperating organization, the Cambodian Organization for Children and Development (COCD), to initiate the detailed planning.

Michael Wright (RC of Phnom Penh), COCD colleagues and I visited the proposed sites for the water project in the remote area of Pursat Province of Cambodia, which is near the Thai border.  In fact, at one stage we were only 500 meters from the Thai border.  We travelled 1120 kms in five days, many of the travel on four-wheel drive tracks that are inaccessible in the wet season.  We visited 23 possible sites and were able to approve 18 sites for the project. So we have suitable locations for each of the wells, water collection systems and the bio-sand filtration system.   Each of the days visiting the sites were about 10 hours in duration so it was constant travel and evaluation.

We took GPS coordinates for for each site as well as photographs and recorded notes.  So the project is well and truly underway.

In the original application we estimated the beneficiaries of this project at around 2000 individuals.  The site visits have revealed that this is a gross under estimation.  It is likely to be in excess of 3000 marginalized poor who will benefit from the generosity of the supporters of this project.

We still need payments of committed funds from a small number of district 9780 clubs.  The project will be delayed until these funds are transferred.

So now tenders for the installation of the water systems will be called for and hopefully work will commence soon.  The project goes into next year to allow the wet season which makes many of the locations inaccessible.

Bryan Humphrey, District 9780 and President Elect, RC Geelong East

Best regards

Feb Fast 2017

The "Torquay Alco Free and Fun" Team team is doing febfast 2017.

So why not join in the febfast fun!

You can chose to give up Sugar &/or Alcohol

I've just joined febfast 2018, the 28 day health and wellbeing challenge that raises money for disadvantaged youth in Australia.
I'm doing it as part of the Torquay Rotary Zero Alcohol Maximum Fun Team team, and I'm looking forward to kick-starting 2016
with something a little different.

The reason for my email? Well, many hands make light work and I reckon febfast would be easier (and more fun!) if you joined me.

Amanda Hough and Maggie Isom have already joined the Team........so......

What do you say?

To get involved, click ‘Join This Team’ on our Team Page to register.

If you aren't up for the challenge, it would be great if you could sponsor us by making a donation instead.

Cheers!
Greg (Plugga) Plumridge

PS: want to know more about febfast? Check out their website.

Dinner Meeting Registration & Apologies

MEETING APOLOGIES - What do I do?

Notifying someone about changes to your meeting attendance is your responsibility!

Our meetings have catered dinners, so if you are unable to attend a meeting, or if your partner is unable to attend a designated Partner's Night, YOU MUST ADVISE us of your or your partner’s absence.  This also applies if you are attending the meeting but not dining.

There are two ways to do this, either record the information in advance in the "Apology Book" that is available at the book in table at each meeting or telephone 03-5222-2022.  An answering service operates out of hours.
  • All apologies must be made no later than 9.00AM on the Monday of the meeting (unless other arrangements were addressed in the Bulletin).
  • If no apology is recorded by that time, the absentee member will be issued with an invoice to pay the Club the dinner fee of $25 for your non-attendance, and/or that of your partner if it is an official Partner's Night.

  • On "Partners Nights" it is a different arrangement as it will be assumed that your partner WILL BE attending unless you apologise for them!
Remember if you are bringing guests or your partner (to a non-partner night) you need to notify us of the extra number of persons who will be attending.

Absence when away on travel is not an excuse.  It is your reasonability to lodge your apology and it is recommended that this be recorded beforehand in the “Apology Book” to save you remembering each week whilst you are away.
