Bulletin No. 34 – From the President

Jan Juc Surf Club – so impressive
It is not an understatement to say I was blown away by the young people we heard from at the Jan Juc Surf Club last week and by the not so young Daryl and his life long commitment to the club and to life saving. To hear Charlie, David, Drew and Isabella talk about being involved with the club since age 6 – 9; to go on to become Patrol Captains; Patroller of the month; to now lead and coach nippers and other young surf life savers and see coaching and leading as a lifetime commitment; to become a paid life guard; to be involved at Australian championship level in kayaking and surf rowing; to know aquatics is the career for them.  And the list goes on.  I really was quite speechless at the inspiration these young people provided us.
A big thank you to Greg (Pig) and his team and club for hosting us, providing the excellent BBQ and congratulation for your ongoing commitment to the local community and for the mentoring, leadership and opportunities you provide our local young people.

District grants for 2017 -18 – your thoughts please
As a club, we are qualified to apply for a District Grant for the 2017-18 year and really should take up this opportunity. Do you have ideas about projects we have planned or might consider next year for which $300 - $3000 would be helpful, remembering we must spend at least as much, if not more, of our own funds on the project.
I know this sounds simple but rather than just relying on the few members of the board, I would really like ideas from all members.

What makes a great bond dress up team?
We can have lots of fund and win a peddle Aston Martin car – this would make a great raffle prize for our Motorshow 2018 – just need you to register for the conference dinner and collectively for us to become the cast of a Bond movie.  Maggie has already claimed Money Penny, so she is off limits.  And I need help – I am no good at costumes so need help and suggestions. Amanda Hough is coordinating so let’s get our creative heads together and see what we can do. It will be fun.

District Conference registrations - and we’re doing breakfast on Sunday 2 April
BE Bold and register for the District Conference here. Mike will also be seeking assistance to work on the BBQ on the Sunday morning of the conference as, along with Geelong East Rotary Club, we are providing breakfast to everyone who is attending the hands on project at Geelong Mums.

Monday 27 February 201 7 saw Torquay Rotarians gathering on the front patio area at Jan Juc Surf Club with drinks and nibbles. enjoying the fellowship and taking in the million-dollar beach views. For the second year in a row we had picked the weather.

Our host and chef for the evening, Jan Juc life member, Greg Touzel, had assembled a group of Jan Juc club volunteers, including Graeme and Sandy Kennedy. to set up the venue and prepare the food. Rotary President Lesley was amused to learn that Greg is widely known throughout the Torquay community by his lifesaving nickname of "Pig '.

We were then joined by a panel of Jan Juc young gun lifesavers and their mothers on our tables to share in the meal. After a hearty and tasty meal of steak, salad. potato and all the trimmngs or the vegetarian option, Pig introduced the first of his panel members Charlie Dent. Using a question answer format and prompted by Pig's probing we learned that young Charlie has already had a strong involvement in school and leadership activates, has been successful in surf lifesaving competitions, has already earned the title of Juc lifesaver of the month and has been appointed Patrol captain, responsible for beach safety on busy summer days on Jan Juc beach. Like most of the panelists Charlie started at a young age with the Jan Juc Rippers learning water and lifesaving skills from such experienced mentors as Greg Touzel. John Jacoby and Doug Bartlett.

Next Isabella Heather. an outstanding young boat rower explained how she planned to use her experiences in aquatics to fashion a career in leadership activities. professional life guarding and perhaps as a personal trainer.

Drew Green is a champion swimmer who has scored many achievements in open water swims and carnivals and is a member of the Victorian state team.

This was followed by a short break for desert

Greg then introduced David Inguanti who is mixing a successful academic career and university course with training and competition in canoeing and kayaking. David is a member of Barwon Sports Academy and a member of the Victorian State canoe team. After winning the Australian K2 and coming second in the Ki championships, he competed in the world championships in Germany. He also patrols and competes in carnivals for Jan Juc. After a stellar VCE score he has enrolled in a Bachelor of Engineering and Biomedical Science double degree at Monash University. 'This is aimed at a career in designing advanced technology and bio medical innovation such as a bionic eye or 4d lung imaging method. David is clearly a gifted scholar and gifted athlete who has developed his skills from the Nippers program on within Jan Juc surf club. He and his mother Masree were also great dinner guests at my table.

After the young guns. Pig introduced an old hand to lifesaving in Daryl Moss (Mossy) who outlined an amazing career in lifesaving leadership development and mentoring over a period of some 40 years which has earned him a life membership of Jan Juc surf club and the DHL Volunteer of the year award at the Surf Lifesaving National awards of Excellence 201 6 recognising his massive contribution through mentoring and fund raising programs at Jan Juc

Tea and coffee was served. By this time we were gob smacked at the amount of talent being nurtured within Jan Juc Surf Lifesaving Club among such fine Australian young adults. As we left the Jan Juc volunteers began packing up the room and the kitchen area. Thanks Greg Touzel and your team for another uplifting event at Jan Juc Surf Club.

Dinner Meeting Registration & Apologies

MEETING APOLOGIES - What do I do?

Notifying someone about changes to your meeting attendance is your responsibility!

Our meetings have catered dinners, so if you are unable to attend a meeting, or if your partner is unable to attend a designated Partner's Night, YOU MUST ADVISE us of your or your partner’s absence.  This also applies if you are attending the meeting but not dining.

There are two ways to do this, either record the information in advance in the "Apology Book" that is available at the book in table at each meeting or telephone 03-5222-2022.  An answering service operates out of hours.
  • All apologies must be made no later than 9.00AM on the Monday of the meeting (unless other arrangements were addressed in the Bulletin).
  • If no apology is recorded by that time, the absentee member will be issued with an invoice to pay the Club the dinner fee of $25 for your non-attendance, and/or that of your partner if it is an official Partner's Night.

  • On "Partners Nights" it is a different arrangement as it will be assumed that your partner WILL BE attending unless you apologise for them!
Remember if you are bringing guests or your partner (to a non-partner night) you need to notify us of the extra number of persons who will be attending.

Absence when away on travel is not an excuse.  It is your reasonability to lodge your apology and it is recommended that this be recorded beforehand in the “Apology Book” to save you remembering each week whilst you are away.
