Presidents Report No 47

Bulletin No. 47 – From the President

Hello everyone

We all enjoyed hearing from two of our new members last week – Terry and Kelly.  Thank you both for sharing your stories with us.

We learned that Terry retired as a psychologist, but his path to that profession was meandering, starting with leaving school at the age of 15, an apprenticeship in Ballarat, a stint in national service, the merchant navy – boarding his first ship in Iran – 4 children, meeting and marrying Ita thanks to the need to have his Deakin Uni essays typed and lots of experiences along the way.

Kelly shared her journey, which started in Sealake in the Mallee, from where she left to do Years 11 and 12 in Geelong and didn’t want to return so headed to Melbourne to work as a legal secretary. Several moves with Paul and the family, including to Shepparton, before coming here to Torquay. Kelly was herself an exchange student who didn’t settle on her return – sounds a bit like her description of Liam’s difficulty in settling now. And there is a story yet to be told which includes references to Paul purporting to be a dolphin trainer.

This is a major event for us in 2017.  All funds raised will support Rotary Health programs – Interplast, ROMAC, Australian Rotary Health Foundation and a local health project.
Barwon Health Volunteer Patient Transport

It was my great pleasure to present Jaime-Lea Bronca from Barwon Health with our cheque for $3000 to go towards funding a vehicle in the Volunteer Patient Transport program.
We learned from Jaime that these funds will assist in continuing the service for hundreds of patients every week who would otherwise be unable to get to their appointments at Barwon Health.  She explained the majority are patients of the Andrew Love Cancer Centre and that each of their vehicles averages over 50,000 km every year so are very busy.

Entertainment Books

Thanks to Vern D'Souza for the great job he has done encouraging you all to purchase Entertainment Books. Every time one of you purchases a Book in the name of our Club a commission comes back to your Club. So this year Vern was able to present the Club with a cheque for $390. Last year's books have now expired so if you haven't yet renewed your subscription yet you should get onto it.

Joint Board meeting this week
Out last Board meeting for this year is also a joint meeting with next year’s board.  If you have anything you would like us to consider, please just let me know or send through an email.

Let's Start Thinking About Next Year

As our current Rotary year draws to a close now is an appropriate time for us to begin planning for the "New" Rotary year.

2017-18 will be an exciting year for our Club particularly as we work alongside our recently inducted new members. President Gaynor will give a presentation on this to the Club early in the "New" Year however in the mean time as per President Elect Gaynor's recent email to you she would like all members to  give thought as to what Areas of Service and Projects you would like to be involved with.
  • International Projects with Lesley
  • Community/Australian Service Projects with Michael
  • Vocational Service Projects with Richard
  • Youth Service Projects with Gerard
  • Membership Committee with Amanda
  • Public Relations with Greg

Please can you let Gaynor know (by email) which committee you would prefer to help with. We need a fair distribution and if I don't hear back from you, I will allocate your service role according to needs.
Also if you would like to be involved as a Committee member for any of our Major Events please also indicate this in your preferences to Gaynor.

Cub Projects
  • Motor Show
  • Book Fair
  • BBQ's
  • Ride the Bellarine
  • ANZAC Day
  • Golf Day
  • Major Events (ie Dine with Cadel)
......or if you have any ideas for possible future projects/events please raise these with any Board Members for consideration.

Most importantly our Club urgently needs to nominate a President Elect for the 2018-19 year to enable that person to participate in the full President Elect Training Program during the coming year.

Also before the "New" year gets underway there are two tasks for which assistance could be used, they are -
  1. GOLF DAY Since the evolution of the Torquay Golf Club into the RACV Resort, our Club has struggled to return the Graham Price Golf to the popular and significant event it was in its heyday. This year an opportunity exists for this event to be included in the Calendar for the inaugural "Torquay Life Festival" which is being held during the month of October. Darrel Brewin is the Lead of the Golf Committee and would be eager to hear from anyone interested in joining this committee. Please contact Darrel on 0417185071
  2. Public Relations If you are media savvy have an interest in photography and/or are comfortable working with Facebook, writing short articles and posting website stories then Greg Plumridge would be interested in having you join the Public Relations Team. There are unlimited opportunities for us to promote our Club to the outside world and we are restricted only by the people power and time available to present and post the articles. Please contact Greg to discuss on 0418521321

The Rotary Leadership Institute

Is a three part series of fast paced, interactive one day courses offered to refine a Rotarian's leadership skills and increase their knowledge of Rotary.

The dates for the 2017-18 Program have just been released.
The 3 full-day training courses will be held in Geelong on Aug 5, 2017, Oct 14, 2017 and Feb 3, 2018
The club generally pays the fees and registrations close on 30 June.

Who Should Attend RLI:

Rotary Clubs are encouraged to select at least two candidates for RLI annually.  Participants return to their Club with enthusiasm new contacts, fresh ideas, an increased understanding of their potential as Rotarians, and valuable skills impacting their potential leadership in the Club. In particular, It's good for all Rotarians but especially recommended for new members, those with board positions and Presidents Elect.

In recent years Vernon D'Souza and PE Gaynor Schols have graduated from RLI so if you are interested in the course I encourage you to discuss with either of them.

Please contact Chris Sims on 0439 209 036 for more details or

Dinner Meeting Registration & Apologies

MEETING APOLOGIES - What do I do?

Notifying someone about changes to your meeting attendance is your responsibility!

Our meetings have catered dinners, so if you are unable to attend a meeting, or if your partner is unable to attend a designated Partner's Night, YOU MUST ADVISE us of your or your partner’s absence.  This also applies if you are attending the meeting but not dining.

There are two ways to do this, either record the information in advance in the "Apology Book" that is available at the book in table at each meeting or telephone 03-5222-2022.  An answering service operates out of hours.
  • All apologies must be made no later than 9.00AM on the Monday of the meeting (unless other arrangements were addressed in the Bulletin).
  • If no apology is recorded by that time, the absentee member will be issued with an invoice to pay the Club the dinner fee of $25 for your non-attendance, and/or that of your partner if it is an official Partner's Night.

  • On "Partners Nights" it is a different arrangement as it will be assumed that your partner WILL BE attending unless you apologise for them!
Remember if you are bringing guests or your partner (to a non-partner night) you need to notify us of the extra number of persons who will be attending.

Absence when away on travel is not an excuse.  It is your reasonability to lodge your apology and it is recommended that this be recorded beforehand in the “Apology Book” to save you remembering each week whilst you are away.
