Report No 18

World Polio Day was on 24th October.

We reflected on Rotary's most important task - to end Polio. Thanks to Chris Sims for his enlightening update. We have paid $100 to Polio Plus as a tribute of thanks to Jessie Harman.
Some us also attended the talk in Highton by polio survivor, Gary Newton, who will be the ambassador for the End Polio Now "Ride the Bellarine" fundraiser.

Our speaker for the night was Jacqui Bennett talking about "Humans in Geelong". I would encourage you to submit a good-news story on yourself or any of our wonderful Surf Coast volunteers to humansingeelong@gmail.com

Thanks to all members who have worked hard recently at the BBQ, Shed and book fair working bee. Your efforts are much appreciated.
A special thanks to Chris Sims who represented our club at the district grant qualifying seminar recently and also to Lesley Shedden who will attend the District AGM on 26 Nov in Ararat as our representative.

On 1st Nov the planning committee, consisting of Gaynor Schols, Trevor Pickles, Linda Neale, Kelly Binyon and  Robyn O' Loughlin, met to work on our club's 5 year strategic plan.

Monday 6th November - Dress for the Races!
A partner's social night of fun, fashions and sweeps.
PLEASE CALL 5222-2022 TO NOTIFY IF YOUR PARTNER WILL OR WILL NOT BE ATTENDING.
The usual procedure is that it will be assumed that your partner WILL BE attending unless you apologise for them but please make sure to verify one way or the other so you won't be charged for people who don't attend.
We will also have 2 guests with Dr John Oswald from Vaiola Hospital in Tonga.

Stories
Humans in Geelong

Jacqui Bennett is a part-time Primary School teacher who was looking to make a difference. After a week of 3 lots of bad news, she awoke in the middle of the night to think ‘I want to write Humans in Geelong!’

Humans in Geelong is a new Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/HumansinGeelong/

Website: www.humansingeelong.com Instagram: @humansingeelong  Twitter: @HumansinGeelong (HUG for short)

We aim to inspire!

We are a small team of ‘Not-for-Profit’ volunteers who report on the ‘good news’stories of our home town Geelong, and the Greater Geelong area. The stories are about the everyday humans who are taking action, one way or another, and making a difference. This includes shedding light on causes, however small, that may not be covered in the mainstream media. Stories showcase creativity, sustainable practices and the opportunities within our region. They bring hope and help to create a better world.

We got our inspiration from the Humans in Melbourne Facebook page and thought ‘Why not do something like that in Geelong?’.

We value Creativity, Empathy, Connectedness and Engagement.

Similar pages such as Humans in Melbourne and Humans of New York, are highly successful and bring the community together. We were thrilled with the turn up of over 1,500 people to our first Humans in Geelong Expo 2017 on Sunday 8th October at Deakin Waterfront Campus. We had 44 groups exhibiting, 16 speakers, 8 live performances and a number of displays. All the information about this highly successful day is available on our website www.humansingeelong.com

Please show your support by following the facebook page and sharing the stories.

You can nominate story ideas by emailing humansingeelong@gmail.com

Dinner Meeting Registration & Apologies

MEETING APOLOGIES - What do I do?

Notifying someone about changes to your meeting attendance is your responsibility!

Our meetings have catered dinners, so if you are unable to attend a meeting, or if your partner is unable
to attend a designated Partner's Night, YOU MUST ADVISE us of your or your partner’s absence.
This also applies if you are attending the meeting but not dining.

There are two ways to do this, either record the information in advance in the "Apology Book"
that is available at the check in table at each meeting or telephone 03-5222-2022.
An answering service operates out of hours.
  • All apologies must be made no later than 9.00AM on the Monday of the meeting (unless other arrangements
  • were addressed in the Bulletin).
  • If no apology is recorded by that time, the absentee member will be issued with an invoice to pay the Club the
  • usual dinner fee of $25 for your non-attendance, and/or that of your partner if it is an official Partner's Night.

  • On "Partners Nights" it is a different arrangement as it will be assumed that your partner WILL BE attending unless you apologise for them!
Remember if you are bringing guests or your partner (to a non-partner night) you need to notify us of the extra number of persons who will be attending.

Absence when away on travel is not an excuse.  It is your reasonability to lodge your apology and it is recommended that this
be recorded beforehand in the “Apology Book” to save you remembering each week whilst you are away.
