Report No 5

Thanks PP Lesley Shedden for standing in for me last week and inducting our 40th member, Dr John Oswald OAM.
John, we are thrilled to welcome you to Torquay.

Feedback from President's Meeting
Our Assistant District Governor, Judy Beasley, is back from her travels and will visit us with DG Ray Herbert on 18th September.
Some of the issues discussed:
  • A speaker from the Umoja Project in Kenya will visit our area in October and all clubs are asked to support.
  • A membership initiative is being planned with Geelong Chamber of Commerce on 18th October and clubs are encouraged to attend.
  • Ride the Bellarine was approved - to go ahead on 15th April 2018.
  • A Rotary expo is being planned to attract members in our area. All clubs asked to join in.
  • We were reminded to plant one tree for each Rotarian before April. The Geelong clubs are proposing to do it together on an appointed day.
  • Drysdale are knitting beanies to sell for "Lift the Lid" if anyone wants to get involved.
  • The group 9&10 International Global Grant application was discussed. It is to supply a solar-powered water pump to Mvumi Hospital in Tanzania.
  • A Rotary Friendship group of 100 from Chennai will visit the Great Ocean Road on 14 November. We were asked to assist with lunch for them.
  • If we need volunteers for any projects Deakin University can help us.
  • We met Aliya Tierney, president of Barwon Rotaract.

    Membership Dues
Our club has had to pay our July RI dues as well as District dues and RDU. This leaves our bank balance in a sad state so we really need all members who have not yet paid their annual dues to do so immediately. If you have a problem in making this payment please contact me to discuss.

Chairmans Report - Australian Border Force

We were fortunate to hear an interesting, informative and at times amusing address from Michael Innazzano, a senior Manager at Melbourne Airport for the Australian Border Force ( formerly the Customs Department). Michael has had over thirty years experience in the job, working his way through the ranks from being recruited as a customs officer to now a senior manager with the majority of his working life being spent at Melbourne airport.
The scope of the job has literally exploded over recent years with the huge increase in terrorist related crime and the drug trade together with identification of false documentation and money laundering.
With all the additional technical developments to assist in protecting our country there is still a huge reliance on the skill and experience of the Border Force operators who study people, situations, body language and reactions. They know the signs and what to look for and receive great back up from highly trained dogs and of course interaction with other authorities from around the world.
It was quite timely that Michael spoke to us on Monday particularly with the Terrorist threat uncovered in Sydney on the weekend.
Michael obviously had to be very discreet but we got the message that there is plenty happening out there every day and our defenders are working nonstop to keep us safe.
The volume and depth of questions indicated that our members enjoyed this Speaker.

Regards,
Bruce Smith

Dinner Meeting Registration & Apologies

MEETING APOLOGIES - What do I do?

Notifying someone about changes to your meeting attendance is your responsibility!

Our meetings have catered dinners, so if you are unable to attend a meeting, or if your partner is unable
to attend a designated Partner's Night, YOU MUST ADVISE us of your or your partner’s absence.
This also applies if you are attending the meeting but not dining.

There are two ways to do this, either record the information in advance in the "Apology Book"
that is available at the check in table at each meeting or telephone 03-5222-2022.
An answering service operates out of hours.
  • All apologies must be made no later than 9.00AM on the Monday of the meeting (unless other arrangements
  • were addressed in the Bulletin).
  • If no apology is recorded by that time, the absentee member will be issued with an invoice to pay the Club the
  • usual dinner fee of $25 for your non-attendance, and/or that of your partner if it is an official Partner's Night.

  • On "Partners Nights" it is a different arrangement as it will be assumed that your partner WILL BE attending unless you apologise for them!
Remember if you are bringing guests or your partner (to a non-partner night) you need to notify us of the extra number of persons who will be attending.

Absence when away on travel is not an excuse.  It is your reasonability to lodge your apology and it is recommended that this
be recorded beforehand in the “Apology Book” to save you remembering each week whilst you are away.
