Report No 4

Monday 24th July

Jingle Bells and Ho Ho Ho, what a great Christmas in July we had at Minya Winery in front of the log fire with lots of Christmas Cheer. Santa Smith brought along gifts which were drawn as door prizes and Gail Birchell had each table decorated with Christmas sparkle. Lorraine, Rod and Mackenzie worked their Christmas culinary magic. Thanks to all for making this a very special social night.

District Conference 6-8 April 2018 - Jazz Theme
I know that April is long way off but the conference will be held in DG Ray's home town of Mt Gambier so early planning is essential if we are to get a good Torquay group together. President Greg Cooke from RC Grovedale Waurn Ponds is arranging a 34 seater coach trip, with stops and accommodation included, at $495. If anyone is interested contact me for the brochure. Bookings are now open at greg.waurnponds@helloworldtravel.com.au (Hurry if you want a seat!)

Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI)
Enrolments have closed but there may still be time to squeeze in at the first session on 5th August at the Eastern Hub. This is a wonderful program for new Rotarians to learn all about Rotary so if anyone at all is interested in attending please contact me immediately.

Monday 31st July
Unfortunately I have to represent our club at the Group President's Meeting in Geelong on Monday night but I hope you all have a wonderful evening with guest speaker Michael Iannazzo talking about border security.
Vice President Lesley Shedden will be standing in for me and will induct our new transferring member, Dr John Oswald, into the club.

Stories
The Geelong Art Gallery
Please find below Maggie Isom's report from her presentation on being a guide at the Geelong Art Gallery from our meeting 2 weeks ago. Apologies Maggie for not running this in last weeks bulletin.

Maggie joined the Volunteer Guiding team at the Geelong Art Gallery in 2014 & thoroughly enjoys her new role on a new & different learning curve.
She shared some interesting facts about the Gallery
Established in 1896, & officially opened in 1915,  Geelong Gallery is one of Australia’s leading and oldest regional art galleries.
The Gallery’s has a significant collection of over 6,000 works which includes Iconic Australian and International paintings, Contemporary works, prints sculpture and decorative arts. In fact Edward Fischer (Torquay’s Fischer St)  produced the gold cup for the Geelong Racing Club, that sits in pride of place at the Gallery
The Aims of the Gallery are to
  • Deliver artistic and cultural advancement for the community thus making Geelong a more liveable City;
  • Bring economic benefit to the region through tourism arising from its exhibitions and events; and
  • Provide life-long and inclusive learning opportunities for students and for the wider community, through its schools  & Art & Memory programs

About 60,000 people visit the Gallery each year to enjoy the variety of Exhibitions, such as the acquisitive Print Awards & many other events.
2017 has been an exciting year for the Gallery with the appointment of new Director Jason Smith, an internationally recognised public art museum director and exhibitions and collections curator who has worked in the art museum sector for 25 years.  His appointment builds on Geelong Gallery’s commitment as Australia’s foremost regional gallery.
He came from Curatorial Manager of Australian Art at Queensland Art Gallery/Gallery of Modern Art, Director and CEO of Heide Museum of Modern Art , Curator at the National Gallery of Victoria
Exciting changes are underway at Geelong Gallery, there will be a short term Gallery closure: Monday 17 July to Friday 11 August 2017 to make way for
the hosting of major exhibitions –
Fred Williams in the You Yangs and the Art Gallery of New South Wales’ Archibald Prize, on October 28
We, as Rotarians need to support this wonderful asset in our community.

Travelling Rotarians
We survived Greenland!!

The weather was milder than we had ever envisaged, in fact we got a little sunburnt on a couple of occasions.
The icebergs were amazing & the highlight of our trip.
Most of the country not quite ready for tourists yet, very poor infrastructure eg: no footpaths & narrow roads.
In the photo we are drinking a Martini at 11am chilled with ice over 1000 years old from the Qooroq Ice Fjord in South Greenland.
After 18 days in Greenland it was good to get back to civilisation here in Copenhagen. Sunday we fly to Iceland for 10 days.
Cheers
Pete & Cynthia.

Dinner Meeting Registration & Apologies

MEETING APOLOGIES - What do I do?

Notifying someone about changes to your meeting attendance is your responsibility!

Our meetings have catered dinners, so if you are unable to attend a meeting, or if your partner is unable
to attend a designated Partner's Night, YOU MUST ADVISE us of your or your partner’s absence.
This also applies if you are attending the meeting but not dining.

There are two ways to do this, either record the information in advance in the "Apology Book"
that is available at the check in table at each meeting or telephone 03-5222-2022.
An answering service operates out of hours.
  • All apologies must be made no later than 9.00AM on the Monday of the meeting (unless other arrangements
  • were addressed in the Bulletin).
  • If no apology is recorded by that time, the absentee member will be issued with an invoice to pay the Club the
  • usual dinner fee of $25 for your non-attendance, and/or that of your partner if it is an official Partner's Night.

  • On "Partners Nights" it is a different arrangement as it will be assumed that your partner WILL BE attending unless you apologise for them!
Remember if you are bringing guests or your partner (to a non-partner night) you need to notify us of the extra number of persons who will be attending.

Absence when away on travel is not an excuse.  It is your reasonability to lodge your apology and it is recommended that this
be recorded beforehand in the “Apology Book” to save you remembering each week whilst you are away.
