Presidents Report No 37

From the President

Hello everyone
Although a small group, we had an interesting range of topics to discuss and consider on Monday.
We farewelled Ed for another 12 months.  Thank you Ed for joining us over summer – we look forward to seeing you in 2018 – and for sharing your insights into the similarities and differences between our two clubs. You suggested we are rather more casual than your home club – I guess the description as a ‘no ties’ club applies.
We are also about to farewell Ken back to Canada where, as President Elect, he is considering the many parts of the President’s role and shared with us some of the key projects undertaken by his club. There is no doubt the ‘Scotch tasting’ sparked lots of interest. Ken, thank you for joining us and all the best for your Presidential year.
We also heard from Chris Sims with updates on our range of youth activities. In particular, it is fantastic to have two RYPEN participants who are young people associated with Diversitat and who volunteers and helped us out at the Book Fair.
Chris is also seeking support /consideration for the Club to share an inbound Youth Exchange student with another club. This would seeing us hosting for six months rather than 12, and may appeal to you as a host family.  This request has been made through incoming AG Judy Beasley. If you have an interest please let Chris know.

Raising money to End Polio

Trevor Pickles is joining Brian Mynott to Ride the Bellarine and represent us.  Thank you Brian and Trevor.  No doubt you are receiving lots of ‘pre-ride’ advice.
Don’t forget to let Greg know if you are able to volunteer on the day.

As a club, we are qualified to apply for a District Grant for the 2017-18 year and really should take up this opportunity. Do you have ideas about projects we have planned or might consider next year for which $300 - $3000 would be helpful, remembering we must spend at least as much, if not more, of our own funds on the project.
I know this sounds simple but rather than just relying on the few members of the board, I would really like ideas from all members. It will be a key discussion at Monday’s Board meeting.

2017 Strathewen School Visit

The 2017 Strathewen SchoolTorquay Beach day was another memorable day for everyone involved. I'm not sure who gets the most out of these days? The students, teachers and families who visit from Strathewen or the Rotarians and Partners who assist on the day. This annual visit provides an opportunity for us to reunite and follow the progress of their school community. Principal Jane Hayward has worked hard to explore every opportunity for to ensure that this current crop of students will be equipped with unprecedented understanding and knowledge of fire and how to prepare for it. Fear will be replaced by confidence should return to this community

The weather almost held to the end of the day when a bus load of weary children, and adults headed for home.

Arrival of 2 more abandoned children
With mixed emotions we welcomed 2 new young children who were abandoned. You know how you feel when hear of an abandoned animal. You can't imagine a child being abandoned can you?  It is just too hard to comprehend.  But now we have our 3rd and 4th abandoned children who came into our care on the 13th March, taking our Umoja family to 8 children. The children are approximately 1 and 1.5 years old. We are unable to ascertain their names or where they came from at this stage.  It is also unknown if they are brother and sister They arrived very scared and traumatised into our family, where they will be given counselling, 3 meals a day, love, and care.  The police are continuing with their enquiries, and thankfully Umoja was there to assist these children.  Both are very malnourished. Dinner Meeting Registration & Apologies

MEETING APOLOGIES - What do I do?

Notifying someone about changes to your meeting attendance is your responsibility!

Our meetings have catered dinners, so if you are unable to attend a meeting, or if your partner is unable to attend a designated Partner's Night, YOU MUST ADVISE us of your or your partner’s absence.  This also applies if you are attending the meeting but not dining.

There are two ways to do this, either record the information in advance in the "Apology Book" that is available at the book in table at each meeting or telephone 03-5222-2022.  An answering service operates out of hours.
  • All apologies must be made no later than 9.00AM on the Monday of the meeting (unless other arrangements were addressed in the Bulletin).
  • If no apology is recorded by that time, the absentee member will be issued with an invoice to pay the Club the dinner fee of $25 for your non-attendance, and/or that of your partner if it is an official Partner's Night.

  • On "Partners Nights" it is a different arrangement as it will be assumed that your partner WILL BE attending unless you apologise for them!
Remember if you are bringing guests or your partner (to a non-partner night) you need to notify us of the extra number of persons who will be attending.

Absence when away on travel is not an excuse.  It is your reasonability to lodge your apology and it is recommended that this be recorded beforehand in the “Apology Book” to save you remembering each week whilst you are away.
