Bulletin No  14

From the President

Bulletin No. 14 – From the President

Hello from sunny Miami – Qld. that is – where the most active I’ve been is to walk on the beach.

I have attended one Rotary meeting so far – an online meeting with Rotary eClub One – the first ever online Rotary Club. Based out of Minnesota, USA it boasts some 200 members. Can you imagine that? In attending the meeting, I watched a video – ‘What in the world is Rotary’ – narrated by Roger Climpson, which I encourage you to watch. It provides a really good overview of what we are about as Rotarians.

I also read two articles – one about Todd Jenkins titled Young member uses leadership positions to promote diversity, inclusion is really inspirational:

This month, Jenkins is leading a Young Professionals Summit in northwest Arkansas, an event cosponsored by Rotary clubs in the area. The summit's aim is to empower emerging leaders to create positive change within themselves, their workplace, and their community. Says Jenkins: "I want to showcase Rotary and encourage attendees to expose themselves to what we do."

To promote that goal, Jenkins speaks to clubs all over the world about diversity and inclusion. "I don't necessarily like using the word diversity. To me, diversity is 'fullness,' " he says. "I believe Rotary can achieve fullness through investing in our youth and diverse members. I often say to clubs, 'Let's color the Rotary pipeline with our programs like Youth Exchange and membership development.' Those are the people who already have a global experience, which I feel is crucial for Rotary's future.

"Diversity is inviting everyone to the party. Inclusion is allowing everyone at the party to dance the way they want to dance," he adds. "That's what I want for Rotary. Let's all continue the dance."

"If people in our community aren’t exposed to Rotary, how are they going to know all that we do and accomplish? Bringing in young professionals with a financial incentive is great way to holistically develop and fill in what’s missing," he says.

The second article is What is sustainable development and why does it matter? – which is truly information, thought provoking and highlights how Rotary can be, and is, involved in ensuring the world we leave for future generations is one in which they will want to live.

"Lift the Lid" on Mental Health for Rotary Health got off to an early start last week at Torquay Rotary.
At a combined meeting with RC of Belmont tonight Maggie Isom presented an enlightening insight to the effects of this issue and how
we should best assist the people around us who are suffer from its effects every day.
Members supported the cause by wearing some seriously crazy hats and raising funds with raffle ticket sales

Dear Club President,

Gaye and I would like to thank you and your club again for supporting the DG Partners project of providing funds for an Indigenous Nursing Health Scholarship through Australian Rotary Health.

We also thought that we would like to provide you with an update on funds raised. To date, clubs and individuals have been extremely generous and the district now has just over five thousand dollars in support. This means that we shall be able to provide for two scholarships to nursing students in our district.

This is a wonderful example of collaboration and we look forward to presenting this amount to Australian Rotary Health at Conference 2017.

Gaye and I appreciate your support.

Kind regards

Stephen

ROTARY FOUNDATION FACTS...Did you know...

Actually it's more a Polio Fact

A letter from Rotary’s General Secretary, John Hewko, contains news of new cases of wild polio in Nigeria. He also invites us to participate in a ride called ‘Miles to end Polio’ on November 19th. To learn more about this CLICK HERE

Dear District Governor and District Rotary Foundation Chair:
As you know the World Health Organization has confirmed three cases of wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) in Nigeria, the first cases in the country since July 2014. After passing a year without a case of the wild poliovirus, Nigeria was removed from the list of polio-endemic countries in September 2015. These cases – from three local government areas of Borno state – occurred since July 2016. While this news is disappointing for all of us, we must remain steadfast and fully committed to fighting polio anywhere children remain at risk, including Nigeria and Africa. Now, more than ever, we need to redouble our efforts to reach a polio-free world.
On 19 November, a team of Rotary staff and I will join Rotary Senior Leaders, Rotary members from Arizona (D5500) and around the world in El Tour de Tucson to raise funds for polio eradication. The 104-mile ride, which attracts more than 9,000 cyclists a year, is one of the top cycling events in the United States. Our Miles to End Polio fundraising goal is $10 million.
Your district may help us reach this goal with a special Miles to End Polio DDF donation. The district that contributes the most DDF will receive a visit from President-elect Ian H.S. Riseley. In addition, the top five DDF giving districts from 1 July until 15 April will be announced on stage at the Rotary Convention in Atlanta.
Would you like you like to join the team? Take part in the Indoor Ride to End Polio! Ride a stationary bike at your local gym or at home any time from 12-19 November. Register today or feel free to encourage fellow Rotarians to register here and ride with us in Tucson.

To donate DDF to Miles to End Polio, please complete and return this form by 30 November. Personal contributions to the ride may be made as well and are eligible for Paul Harris Recognition Points.

Dinner Meeting Registration & Apologies

MEETING APOLOGIES - What do I do?

Notifying someone about changes to your meeting attendance is your responsibility!

Our meetings have catered dinners, so if you are unable to attend a meeting, or if your partner is unable to attend a designated Partner's Night, YOU MUST ADVISE us of your or your partner’s absence.  This also applies if you are attending the meeting but not dining.

There are two ways to do this, either record the information in advance in the "Apology Book" that is available at the book in table at each meeting or telephone 03-5222-2022.  An answering service operates out of hours.
  • All apologies must be made no later than 9.00AM on the Monday of the meeting (unless other arrangements were addressed in the Bulletin).
  • If no apology is recorded by that time, the absentee member will be issued with an invoice to pay the Club the dinner fee of $25 for your non-attendance, and/or that of your partner if it is an official Partner's Night.

  • On "Partners Nights" it is a different arrangement as it will be assumed that your partner WILL BE attending unless you apologise for them!
Remember if you are bringing guests or your partner (to a non-partner night) you need to notify us of the extra number of persons who will be attending.

Absence when away on travel is not an excuse.  It is your reasonability to lodge your apology and it is recommended that this be recorded beforehand in the “Apology Book” to save you remembering each week whilst you are away.
