Tour of New Geelong Library 9th Aug

Club visit to The Dome aka Geelong Library and Heritage Centre

Our first Vocational visit this year saw round 30 of us enjoying the tour of this amazing facility on Monday. As a building it is spectacular and as a library, inspirational.  It has four levels open to the public and members, on which we saw PCs throughout, reading rooms and chairs, online catalogues and lots more:
  • The heritage centre – also call The Vault - housing an amazing collection of historical document, records, ephemeral and images all in one location.
  • Technology including a Cruiser table (smart touch screen table), microfiche and microfilm readers, presentation space and public PCs.
  • Large print and audio books, magazines, multimedia, non-fiction
  • Technology including onscreen magnifiers, text to speech readers, multimedia-enabled discussion rooms and meeting room with conferencing facilities
  • a dedicated space for children and young people, and features an external timber terrace, a wet-area activities room, age-appropriate technology and collection resources, and a family room
  • and opening later this year a café and yes Rudi, with chardy
Dinner followed at Kanitar Thai Restaurant.  I didn’t stay to eat but, in the words of PP Amanda – ‘ everyone was animated and chatting’ – so great fellowship all round

Thank you to Maggie and Linda for organizing the visit and dinner. It was a really good night and we learned heaps

Mock Job Interviews 23rd & 30th Aug

Many thanks to the 6 members who assisted on Tuesday at the Surf Coast Secondary College with the Mock Interviews they went well

You will recall in last weeks bulletin that we were approached by RC of Grovedale to assist with the Mock Job Interviews for Year 9 students at Grovedale College on Tuesday 23 August and Tuesday 30 August.

Grovedale really value our contribution as their club membership now precludes them from single handed catering for the needs of 160 students over 2 days as is the case this year.

The sessions are intended to run from about 9AM till lunch time on each day. Any assistance to help in this very worthy cause would be much appreciated, To date I have 4 volunteers from our Club but could still use more, so if you are able to assist can you please contact me ASAP on 0439 209036.

Thank you in advance for your help with the organisation of this event.
Chris Sims

Fireside Chats

Fireside Chats

Monday 29 August has been planned as a FIRESIDE CHAT night

This is where , we as Members & partners meet at various homes to share a meal & chat about our Club & ideas for the future

We need about 5 homes & so far President  Lesley Shedden, International Director Gaynor Schols , & Past President Amanda Hough have offered their homes  as hosts for the night - thank you

Please also start thinking about whether you will be attending the Fireside Chats with you partner ? or if you would like to invite any guests. I will soon be calling for registrations as these numbers will assist as it will also obviously determine how many hosts are required.

At this point I still really need  another 2-3 homes , so please let me know ASAP so we can put you on the list & make this another great Torquay Rotary night.

ROTARY FOUNDATION FACTS......Did you know........

There is much that goes on around the world within Rotary and I have not yet anyone who claims that they know everything about Rotary Foundation. So this column will provide some small snippets of Rotary info for you as well as some useful links where you can find out more.

The History of Rotary Foundation CLICK HERE

Personal contributions
Did you know that your personal contributions increase your PHF recognition amount to the same value AND give you PHF points at the rate of one point per dollar which can be transferred to create a new PHF or PHF level?
Foundation Contribution Forms
Contribution forms for the Rotary Foundation are now located on the District website in one easy location at the following link:

Did you know that a group of Rotarians can combine their points to make Recognition? The minimum transfer is 100 points and in denominations of 100 points.

Community Fitness Stations ....coming soon
A major project for Torquay Rotary this year is to install several fitness stations on the Torquay foreshore for the benefit of residents and visitors. There will be 4 stations each consisting of 2 elements of equipment. which will be situated on the walking track along the coast between Elephant Walk (near Zeally Bay Rd) and the carpark above the Surf Beach The equipment is currently being manufactured and will be erected prior to summer. Thanks to some generous corporate funding we are on the home stretch but still need more assistance to complete the project. You are invited to help us raise the final $$$$ to get the equipment in the ground
We hope you will support us in this fantastic project by pledging financial support and sharing this post with your friends. CLICK HERE TO HELP

Dinner Meeting Registration & Apologies

MEETING APOLOGIES - What do I do?

Notifying someone about changes to your meeting attendance is your responsibility!

Our meetings have catered dinners, so if you are unable to attend a meeting, or if your partner is unable to attend a designated Partner's Night, YOU MUST ADVISE us of your or your partner’s absence.  This also applies if you are attending the meeting but not dining.

There are two ways to do this, either record the information in advance in the "Apology Book" that is available at the book in table at each meeting or telephone 03-5222-2022.  An answering service operates out of hours.
  • All apologies must be made no later than 9.00AM on the Monday of the meeting (unless other arrangements were addressed in the Bulletin).
  • If no apology is recorded by that time, the absentee member will be issued with an invoice to pay the Club the dinner fee of $25 for your non-attendance, and/or that of your partner if it is an official Partner's Night.

  • On "Partners Nights" it is a different arrangement as it will be assumed that your partner WILL BE attending unless you apologise for them!
Remember if you are bringing guests or your partner (to a non-partner night) you need to notify us of the extra number of persons who will be attending.

Absence when away on travel is not an excuse.  It is your reasonability to lodge your apology and it is recommended that this be recorded beforehand in the “Apology Book” to save you remembering each week whilst you are away.
