Presidents Report

Bulletin No  9

From the President

I trust you all enjoyed your Fireside Chats on Monday – we certainly did at Coral Street.  The conversations were many and varied, the wine red and white, and the tone very jovial.  Thank you to our hosts – Gaynor and Rudi, John and Maggie and Amanda – for opening up your homes and preparing what were no doubt delicious meals.

Welcome Linda Neale

I am absolutely delighted to announce that Linda Neale is now a member of the Rotary Club of Torquay.  As you wonder what I am on about and recall we inducted Linda earlier this year, there was some confusion in her official registration via ClubRunner and therefore Rotary International, such that Linda was still registered as a member of Queenstown Rotary Club.
Following some formal (and not so formal) communications, this is now resolved and Linda is a fully fledged member of Torquay Rotary c=Club.  So as I said, welcome Linda.

TRF Centennial Motorcyle Expedition - An invitation from Rotary District 3181, India
Explore the royal and scenic beauty of South India like never before.
We would like to invite you and members of your Rotary Club to participate in our event, to mark the 100th year of The Rotary Foundation, “Ride for Rotary-TRF Centennial Expedition”.
This event blends 14 days of International Fellowship, trekking, incredible sightseeing, cultural evenings with Indian music and dance, with well thought off cuisines.
All these start off, with participants getting flagged off from the “Heritage city” of Mysore. Participants travel on motorcycles for next 14 days, with an average travel of 160kms per day. They touch the most beautiful and historically important places to complete the expedition.
The expedition is open for all Rotarians and Rotractors. Proceeds from this event will go to “The Rotary Foundation”.
Awaiting your reply,  Rtn Pashupathi Sharma

ROTARY FOUNDATION FACTS...Did you know...

The Foundation’s assets grew slowly over its first 30 years. At the end of the 1947-48 Rotary year, it had received only about $2 million in contributions since 1917.
Today, the Foundation’s assets stand at more than $1 billion. What led to such a remarkable increase in donations?
It began in 1947, when Paul Harris died after a prolonged illness. Rotary’s beloved founder had told friends that if they wanted to honor him, they should donate to the Foundation. So Rotary established a special fund for the contributions that flooded headquarters as news of Paul’s death spread.

In just 18 months, the Foundation received $1.3 million. Contributions continued to increase over the years, and they first topped $1 million in a single year in 1965.

At the 1978 convention in Tokyo, Rotary announced a two-year 75th anniversary fund, which would receive more than $7.2 million.

In 2004, the Foundation started the Every Rotarian, Every Year campaign to stimulate giving to the Annual Fund, which supports Foundation grants. In 2014-15, that fund received a record $123 million in contributions

Community Fitness Stations ....coming soon
A major project for Torquay Rotary this year is to install several fitness stations on the Torquay foreshore for the benefit of residents and visitors. There will be 4 stations each consisting of 2 elements of equipment. which will be situated on the walking track along the coast between Elephant Walk (near Zeally Bay Rd) and the carpark above the Surf Beach The equipment is currently being manufactured and will be erected prior to summer. Thanks to some generous corporate funding we are on the home stretch but still need more assistance to complete the project. You are invited to help us raise the final $$$$ to get the equipment in the ground
We hope you will support us in this fantastic project by pledging financial support and sharing this post with your friends. CLICK HERE TO HELP

Dinner Meeting Registration & Apologies

MEETING APOLOGIES - What do I do?

Notifying someone about changes to your meeting attendance is your responsibility!

Our meetings have catered dinners, so if you are unable to attend a meeting, or if your partner is unable to attend a designated Partner's Night, YOU MUST ADVISE us of your or your partner’s absence.  This also applies if you are attending the meeting but not dining.

There are two ways to do this, either record the information in advance in the "Apology Book" that is available at the book in table at each meeting or telephone 03-5222-2022.  An answering service operates out of hours.
  • All apologies must be made no later than 9.00AM on the Monday of the meeting (unless other arrangements were addressed in the Bulletin).
  • If no apology is recorded by that time, the absentee member will be issued with an invoice to pay the Club the dinner fee of $25 for your non-attendance, and/or that of your partner if it is an official Partner's Night.

  • On "Partners Nights" it is a different arrangement as it will be assumed that your partner WILL BE attending unless you apologise for them!
Remember if you are bringing guests or your partner (to a non-partner night) you need to notify us of the extra number of persons who will be attending.

Absence when away on travel is not an excuse.  It is your reasonability to lodge your apology and it is recommended that this be recorded beforehand in the “Apology Book” to save you remembering each week whilst you are away.
