Bulletin No  23

From the President

Christmas party – Monday 19 December
I look forward to seeing you at our Christmas dinner and festivities at the Torquay Hotel this Monday at 7pm in place of our regular club meetings.  We have a fantastic number registered to attend and enjoy a traditional Christmas dinner.  Many thanks to Maggie and her team in organizing this event.
News from the Board
At our Board meeting on Monday 12 December, 2016 discussed and resolved a number of issues including:
Child Safe Standards as circulated in draft form was accepted as policy,  with one amendment, being that this policy will be reviewed every two years.  What this now means and how we will implement the specific requirements will be finalised by Peter Bollen and me in the New Year.
Allocation of funds
We agreed we will make no further decisions in relation to the allocation of funds until our March meeting, by which time it will be clear how much we have available, as by then the BBQ season will be almost over, and we will know the proceeds of the Book Fair and the Motorshow.
RYLA applications
Just a reminder that applications to attend RYLA are due by 18 December, 2016.  If you know of a young person who may be interested and would like to make an application, please contact Chris Sims for details.
Crowd Funding
Crowd Funding for the fitness stations netted us $612 which is now in our fundraising account
Storage Shed
Mal Slater and Geoff Dawson are assisting in finalizing plans and development of the shed, in association with the Lions Club and Council. It is agreed we will pay one third of the total costs and Lions two thirds, is keeping with the amount of storage needed respectively. Our share will be about $15,000, which, under agreement with the Council, we will provide ‘up front’.  Any excess funds will be reimbursed once construction is completed.
Next board meeting
We will not meet as a board in January so our next meeting will be held on Monday 20 February, 2017. Any issues which arise before then will be resolved by circulation.
District Conference 2017 – Registrations now open
The programme has been finalised and registrations are open for the BeBold District conference to be held at the Barrabook Hills Centre from March 31 – April 1, 2017. Details are on the web – http://www.rotary9780conference.com.au
Conference Home Hosting
The RC of Kardinia is co-ordinating home hosting for Rotarians attending the BeBold 2017 District Conference. If you would like to offer your home for the hosting programme please contact the Hosting Co-ordinator Patrick Wig.

Hi Rotarians,

Earlier this year I decided to sail my 9.4m Noelex 30 across to Tasmania. Originally I thought of having some of my regular crew but that was before I heard Jessica Watson talking at our Club about her solo voyage around the world. I asked if she would sign my copy of her book then I asked her how hard would it be to sail solo across Bass Strait. She was so encouraging and after a long chat I decided that it really is not so onerous.

I read all the literature about solo sailing particularly in Australian waters and spoke to a few Noelex owners who have crossed the ditch. Ben, who moors his yacht next to mine has a 10m ketch and he has circumnavigated Tassie several times single handed. He was a great help in checking all my safety equipment.

Almost everything is now ready for the big trip. A few things yet to sort out such as fixing a torn dodger and a bent pulpit, but most of the important stuff is ready. Boxing day is 3 weeks away, I hope I have 3 days of fair weather at that time.

I thought it may be fun for my friends and family to be able to follow me on my 3 day quest. My ever vigilant daughter Louise told me it was not for fun but a mandatory requirement, so I have organized the following.

If you want to follow my progress there are two options.

1-  I borrowed a GPS tracking devise which you can all log into if you like. I turned it on for a trial run yesterday during the race and was impressed by its simplicity and the information which I could download. It takes readings every 10mins and stores it in the cloud. Let me know if you have trouble looking at this.

FindmeSpot

2-   I also have a tracking app on my iPad which is working well so far. It may not work in Bass Strait without using the Telstra towers but I have no way of checking? Anyhow, go to followmee.com and login using my details. (note "ee" in followmee)
User name = fleurieuwarrior    password = myyacht

Have fun and please send me any feedback.

Depending on the weather we hope to sail out of Launceston about the 3rd or 4th Jan. I say "we" because Ken Beall (Canada) and his step-son Tony (completed four Sydney-Hobarts) are sailing with me. I'll also have the tracker on for the return trip.

The Road Home Project

The Road Home – a project to end homelessness locally
A House refers to a building in which someone lives. A home refers to any location that a person thinks of as the place where they live
and that belongs to them.

To end an episode of homelessness a person needs a house, to end the cycle of homelessness a person needs a home.
The Road Home aims to raise awareness of homelessness and to provide means to assist people to turn a house into a home, by
providing dignity, warmth and identity to people experiencing homelessness.
To achieve this result, the Road Home is working with other services and initiatives to best facilitate the distribution of blankets and
hygiene products to ensure that people that are experiencing homelessness have access to the basic essential items that we all utilise
on a regular basis.
Between April and September we will be conducting a collection of these Bedding and Hygiene items from many Businesses and
Organisations throughout Geelong and wish to ask you if you are interested in volunteering to collect these items on our behalf in
your local area, we will collect them from you and distribute to the service agencies.
The Road Home project will be holding individual events on a bi-monthly basis in an effort to continue to raise awareness behind
a person becoming Homeless and giving them support.
We are organizing a car sleep out for December, please let me know if you are interested in helping with this.
Also we will be holding a Dinner with presentations from many Geelong services that support those experiencing homelessness in
Late March or early April 2017 and wish to know if you are interested in attending.
Finally another Big aim is to combine forces with other like-minded groups and create a shelter in Geelong for those who have no
home to go to.
Please reply and advise if you are interested in supporting this ongoing project in any way you can.

Yours Sincerely

Dinner Meeting Registration & Apologies

MEETING APOLOGIES - What do I do?

Notifying someone about changes to your meeting attendance is your responsibility!

Our meetings have catered dinners, so if you are unable to attend a meeting, or if your partner is unable to attend a designated Partner's Night, YOU MUST ADVISE us of your or your partner’s absence.  This also applies if you are attending the meeting but not dining.

There are two ways to do this, either record the information in advance in the "Apology Book" that is available at the book in table at each meeting or telephone 03-5222-2022.  An answering service operates out of hours.
  • All apologies must be made no later than 9.00AM on the Monday of the meeting (unless other arrangements were addressed in the Bulletin).
  • If no apology is recorded by that time, the absentee member will be issued with an invoice to pay the Club the dinner fee of $25 for your non-attendance, and/or that of your partner if it is an official Partner's Night.

  • On "Partners Nights" it is a different arrangement as it will be assumed that your partner WILL BE attending unless you apologise for them!
Remember if you are bringing guests or your partner (to a non-partner night) you need to notify us of the extra number of persons who will be attending.

Absence when away on travel is not an excuse.  It is your reasonability to lodge your apology and it is recommended that this be recorded beforehand in the “Apology Book” to save you remembering each week whilst you are away.
