Paul Harris Fellow presentations

I was delighted to be part of the presentations to Vernon d’Souza as a Paul Harris Fellow recipient and Greg Plumridge as a Sapphire Paul Harris Fellow recipient at our last meeting.  As I am sure you  understand, the plan was for IPP Amanda to present these two awards at our changeover, however with both Greg and Vernon interstate at the time, it seemed appropriate to recognize their amazing contribution to Rotary in the presence of DG Stephen Lamont.
Congratulations again to Greg and Vernon.
Board meeting with DG Stephen
Prior to our meeting last Monday, the Board had a wide ranging discussion with Stephen.  Some of the key areas we covered were:
  • Membership and how to maintain or even improve our retention levels
  • Changes in RI Legislation – more to come from the new sub-committee on that one
  • New insurance requirements for any activities involving youth – again more to come on that one but it is apparent the District insurer QBE is putting additional requirements on us.
  • District Grants and their availability – for any projects we have we should (must) consider the possibility of a District Grant to help fund them.  The funding for District Grants comes from the Rotary Foundation (so yes, it is us getting back our contributions of three years ago). In this Rotary Year, District Grants of up to $3000 are available, but applications had to be in by April 2016.  As we look to next year we need to consider planned projects which would be suitable for such a grant and make an application(s).
Torquay Fitness Stations
Please to go to www.communities.bendigobank.com.au and support our project by sharing the project. You may even choose to pledge some dollars to the project as so
Meeting 1 August – I am an apology
I will be attending the first meeting of Group 9 and 10 Presidents on Monday 1 August so will miss our meeting with Mayor Rose Hodge. Thank you to Amanda for stepping in on my behalf.

DG Stephen Lamont Visit

Official visit of District Governor Stephen Lamont
We welcomed Stephen and Gaye on Monday 25 July along with many partners so had a really open, friendly, fun meeting.  Stephen’s address to us was a reflection of his own energy and commitment to Rotary and to our District, with lots of focus on the ‘Cs’.
Collaboration – how much more we can do by linking arms and holding hands with others both within the club and with other clubs, not just Rotary, but Lions, Probus, schools and so many more
Community – is about joining together to do joint things for the good of our community
Contribute – to Rotary Foundation – but let’s not just focus on the giving but on the outcomes, and outcomes which may not be apparent today or tomorrow but next year or further away.  Sometimes it’s about planting seeds and waiting for them to grow. Stephen’s story about the support his club of Kardinia gave to a local kindergarten was a great example of this.
Communication – there are plenty of resources in the District to help us with communication, but it’s up to us to first let the District know.  The District website is a huge resource for information and tools for our use - http://www.rotary9780.org/
Conference - Please consider whether you are able to host visitors to our District over the weekend of the District Conference on 3 March – 1 April.  As DG Stephen said, this is for bed and breakfast only and a way to help visiting Rotarians affray some of the costs of attending.  More details to come from District on this one, especially around how to register.
Flexibility (not a ‘C’ but important)- changes in legislation allow us flexibility.  What we do is up to us.
Donation to the Australian Rotary Health Indigenous Nursing Scholarship – Gaye Lamont outlined the importance of this programme and why it is the nominated District project for this year.  On behalf of Torquay Rotary Club, I was delighted to present a cheque for $200 to go towards a scholarship.  Gaye told me later she has already received enough to almost cover one scholarship of $5000, which is excellent.

An Emotive Invocation

Those who were at DG Stephen Lamonts visit to our Club last week will have heard a very impressive Invocation presented by PDG Chris Sims. I felt it would be beneficial for all of you to have the opportunity to share this passage...........

To be young/To be a Rotarian

To be young is to drink clean water from wells you did not dig

To be a Rotarian is to dig wells from which we may never drink

To be young is to dance to music you did not write

To be a Rotarian is to stop Polio from crippling children we will never see dance

To be young is to sit under a tree which you did not plant

To be a Rotarian is to plant trees under which we may never sit

To be young is to benefit from a community you did not build

To be a Rotarian is to build a community from which we may never benefit

To be young is to read books which you did not author

To be a Rotarian is to eliminate illiteracy for people we may never hear read

To be young is to play in fields that you did not make safe

To be a Rotarian is to help clear land mines to keep safe a field we may never cross

(Help us all to be true Rotarians who commit to Service Above Self and be ever mindful of the needs of others)

“Rotarians – ordinary people doing extraordinary things”

Mock Job Interviews 23rd & 30th Aug

Many thanks to the 6 members who assisted on Tuesday at the Surf Coast Secondary College with the Mock Interviews they went well

You will recall in last weeks bulletin that we were approached by RC of Grovedale to assist with the Mock Job Interviews for Year 9 students at Grovedale College on Tuesday 23 August and Tuesday 30 August.

Grovedale really value our contribution as their club membership now precludes them from single handed catering for the needs of 160 students over 2 days as is the case this year.

The sessions are intended to run from about 9AM till lunch time on each day. Any assistance to help in this very worthy cause would be much appreciated, To date I have 4 volunteers from our Club but could still use more, so if you are able to assist can you please contact me ASAP on 0439 209036.

Thank you in advance for your help with the organisation of this event.
Chris Sims

11 Aug - Rotary Young Driver Awareness (RYDA)
The RYDA program is a road safety education program for 17 – 18 year old students.
This Rotary program was initiated 14 years ago by members in the northern suburbs of Sydney. Since then over 400,000 students across Australia and NZ have had the opportunity to attend this outstanding program for young people.

The RYDA program aims to reduce the number of teenagers killed and injured on our roads each year and is a one day school excursion which involves six interactive sessions presented by professional facilitators.  The program is designed to provide students with the knowledge, skills and attitudes that will contribute to their safe and responsible behaviour as drivers and passengers.

The RYDA program content is provided by not-for-profit organisation Road Safety Education and is funded by Rotary Clubs, a small student fee, and support from Local Government grants and local business sponsorship.
Earlier this year the Rotary Clubs in the Geelong area were contacted by Wayne Pecar, President of the Rotary Club of Queenscliff seeking pledges of funding from Rotary Clubs to assist in the launching of a RYDA Pilot Program in the Geelong area.  As a result the Board of the Rotary Club of Torquay agreed to a pledge of $200.00.
We have now been advised that RYDA is happening on Thursday 11th August at Beckley Park! The day is scheduled to commence at 8.30am and to go through until 2.30pm
At the moment three schools are participating , three Rotarians have expressed interest in being trained as facilitators for the program in the future, and a further three have offered to be on the RYDA organising committee . The program still needs more committee members and facilitators with experience as driving instructors or with working with young people. On 11th August the RYDA committee will need volunteers to guide student groups around the venue.
If you are able to attend on the 11th August and assist in any capacity it would be most appreciated if you could contact me as soon as possible.
Many thanks,   Chris Sims

Dinner Meeting Registration & Apologies

MEETING APOLOGIES - What do I do?

Notifying someone about changes to your meeting attendance is your responsibility!

Our meetings have catered dinners, so if you are unable to attend a meeting, or if your partner is unable to attend a designated Partner's Night, YOU MUST ADVISE us of your or your partner’s absence.  This also applies if you are attending the meeting but not dining.

There are two ways to do this, either record the information in advance in the "Apology Book" that is available at the book in table at each meeting or telephone 03-5222-2022.  An answering service operates out of hours.
  • All apologies must be made no later than 9.00AM on the Monday of the meeting (unless other arrangements were addressed in the Bulletin).
  • If no apology is recorded by that time, the absentee member will be issued with an invoice to pay the Club the dinner fee of $25 for your non-attendance, and/or that of your partner if it is an official Partner's Night.

  • On "Partners Nights" it is a different arrangement as it will be assumed that your partner WILL BE attending unless you apologise for them!
Remember if you are bringing guests or your partner (to a non-partner night) you need to notify us of the extra number of persons who will be attending.

Absence when away on travel is not an excuse.  It is your reasonability to lodge your apology and it is recommended that this be recorded beforehand in the “Apology Book” to save you remembering each week whilst you are away.
