It was a balmy night at Bells Beach as a heap of cool Rotary dudes checked out the scenery and the prawns at Mal and Debbie Slaters.

As is our pleasant habit, members of the Grovedale Rotary Club joined us and we had a lovely evening of "not much Rotary business" and plenty of conversation, good food and a good drop.  Thank you Mr and Mrs Slater for your time and hospitality. This was all well and good, because things are hotting up for this coming long weekend when we conduct our first Rotary Book Fair, and at the same time, do our Marshall training for the Cadel Evans race, as well as Night Jar market parking and BBQs.  Well done to last weekends sausage sizzlers who had record takings at the Danger 1000. And welcome again to Linda Neale who has recently joined us, and who, as it turns out, has a sister Glenda with whom I trained at the Alfred Hospital a few years ago....when I was a bit younger...

Please note there is No Rotary meeting next Monday night - but please come to the Scout Hall instead to help Rhonda and her Rotary and Probus team pack up, and with that, enjoy some refreshing drinks and nibbles for your efforts.

Joe Camilleri & the Black Arrows are playing at the Bellarine Estate on Sun 14 Feb 2016 (the day of our Motor Show....Ed)

All funds raised are being donated to support Faith & youth in the local area.  Drysdale RC has negotiated a special deal. Some $10 a ticket is being donated back to Drysdale RC for all tickets sold by its members.

 

President Caroline from Drysdale RC is suggesting other Clubs make like to do the same to benefit their own projects.  DG Jane Cox has endorsed the proposal.  DG Jane will provide more information in the next edition of the Weekly E-bulletin which will be available Monday week.

Our Club has been asked by Cadel's Manager Jason Bakker, and the event organisers, , to assist with providing volunteers for the Cadel Evans Road Race in January.
 
Whilst January is a busy time in all of our lives, the more Rotarians, Friends, and Family that we are able to muster to help will be valuable as our Club continues negotiations to secure Cadel for a Sportspersons Fundraiser Event next year. If you a re a member of a local Probus Club and can possibly engange their members for this event then that would be of enourmous assistance to help our cause as well.

General Volunteer Information
The 2016 Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race will be held on 30 – 31 January 2016.
 
The Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race is an elite race on the world cycling calendar.
  
The Event is comprised of the following elements:
  1. One Day Elite Men’s Road Race (1.HC category) with participation by Pro Tour Teams and Continental Teams);
  2. Elite Women’s Road Race; and
  3. The People’s Ride, a mass participation ride for people of all ages and abilities.
 
The vision is to create one of the greatest weekends of cycling Australia has ever seen, drawing tens of thousands of people to Geelong and the Surf Coast, to showcase the region.
 
We are looking forward to seeing the return of our 2015 Volunteer groups as well as new volunteer groups wishing to join the 900 strong workforce involved in delivering the second edition of the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race.
 
The importance of volunteers for the 2016 Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race cannot be described as anything less than crucial. Volunteers are the backbone of the event industry and their time and energy is imperative to delivering a successful event.
 
Welfare of our Volunteers is paramount and as such, all community groups for the event will receive;
 
  • $50.00 per shift allowance*
  • Uniform
  • Catering**
  • Recognition & Rewards
  • Pre-event training and daily briefings (Dates TBA)
  • Public Liability Insurance
 
* Shift allowance only available to registered community groups for fundraising
** Shifts 4+hours will receive a lunch pack. Shifts less than 4 hours will receive a snack pack.
 
Volunteer Positions
 
Course Marshal
Course Marshals help ensure the safety of the event. They are assigned to designated areas along the race course to help ensure that throughout the CEGORR the course is safe for riders to compete on. As a Course Marshal, it is imperative that the course is kept clear of cars, pedestrians, spectators and any other objects. Course Marshals will be deployed at road closure locations, however they are not permitted nor required to stop traffic, but act more so as a guide and a visual representation at the closure site. (Bring a chair and watch in comfort as the race goes by!)

Aid Station Marshal
The Aid Station Marshals will assist with the below tasks:
  • Set-up and pack-down of allocated Aid Stations
  • Prepare and maintain aid station refreshment levels as required
  • Maintain the cleanliness of the Aid Station area
  • Assist riders requiring access to the Aid Station, toilets, medical services and bike mechanic service
  • Undertake reasonable tasks given by the Team Leader/Event Management.
  • Communicate with your Team Leader regarding any incidents or injuries as required; and
  • To cheer on the cyclists!

As part of the registration process for all volunteers GTR Events requires you to register online through the Volunteer Portal (Rosterfy). Please note if you have already registered and have a log-in from previous Cycling Australia events you will be required to re-register and complete the updated GTR Events registration form. Upon completion of your registration you will be able to view updates and information and apply for future events as they open. It is imperative for each individual of your club/group to complete a registration form. Please ensure you select you are part of a group and confirm your group name on the registration form.

With Gentsomes, each team member tees off at each hole.
 
The captain selects the best tee shot, then each member drops his ball from this point and plays out the hole with his/her own ball. The selected drive is counted as the first shot of each of the team members for that particular hole.
 
There is one additional requirement. During the course of the round all player's drives must be used on 3 occasions, or as indicated by the organisers.
 
The method of scoring in Gentsomes is based on the popular Stableford format and prizes will be awarded for:
  • Team Stableford Score comprising the best 3 scores from each player for each hole
  • All players are eligible for NTP & Hole-in-One privileges, regardless of Tee shot restrictions.
  • Players without Official Handicaps will be allocated no more than 18.

INTERNATIONAL RAWCS PROJECT  NUMBER 53 : VOLUNTEER APPEAL
Our club has the possibility of joining an experienced Rotary team leader, Barry Tennent from the Rotary Club of Rockhampton Fitzroy,  to work on schools and hospital buildings in Munda and Noro areas, Western Province, Solomon Islands early in 2016.
Barry has done 19 previous RAWCS projects, not just in the Solomons, but in Sri Lanka, PNG and Cambodia.
He has already worked at 15 different schools in this area of the Solomons and has found that most do not have basic drinking water, toilets, electricity or books for a library, so the needs are very real.
 
Gerard Mc Namara has already  put up his hand so we are seeking 3 more volunteers. An electrician and plumber would be wonderful but anyone with DYI experience or other trade skills will be welcome. If we can't find club members, perhaps you know "tradies" who would like to go?
 
TIMING: Sometime Last week of April or First week of May 2016 for 2 weeks. Weather is much the same all year round.
ACCOMODATION: At a resort (A/C in rooms) where all meals can be bought at the restaurant or can be purchased at local stalls and markets.
ANY FUN? Barry arranges to take teams to see the local sights during their time off.
FUNDING: We are hoping the club will subside some of the travel and accommodation costs but each volunteer will still need to contribute at least $1,500 plus buy their own food.

Meet District Governor Jane Cox
Jane was born in Sydney but with the family moved to Geelong where she completed her schooling.  A career path in banking led to management, following which Jane took up an overseas posting in London for five years working with the Australian Department of Immigration.  Returning to Australia, Jane was the Business Manager for a busy medical practice for a number of years, before taking up the senior National Travel Co-ordinator role with a large, national food serices provider.  Jane holds a Diploma of Business (Human Resources).
 
A member of the Rotary Club of Geelong since 2001, Jane has held many positions in the Club including President, Secretary and Treasurer.  As President she initiated and took part in the building of a school for the indigenous in Outback Australia.  International activities have included attendance at the Salt Lake City Convention and participation in a Rotary Friendship Exchange to Alaska.  Jane was selected for, and attended,the Brisbane Future Leaders Seminar in 2011.  At District level Jane has been active on a number of District committees including Australian Rotary Health and served for three years as an Assistant Governor to a group of eight clubs.  Jane is a Facilitator with the Rotary Leadeership Institute, and was appointed the District Governor Special Representative for, and esablished, a vibrant new club.  Jane is also a member of the District Club Visioning team assisting Clubs with planning a vision for their futures.  Jane has been recognised with a Paul Harris Fellow and an "Avenues of Service" Citation.
 
With a love of travel, Jane has visited every continent, including Antactica, as well as most countries of the world.  These travel experiences included a managemente role with the International Olympic Committee at the Sydney Olympics in 2000.  Now divorced, Jane continues to live in Torquay.  She is close to her sister, nieces and nephew and is a doting great-aunt to Chloe, and the new arrival Lucy.  A lover of spectator sports, Jane is a long-standing and passionate supporter and member (with one niece) of the Geelong Footbal Club team: "The Cats"

Dinner Meeting Registration & Apologies

MEETING APOLOGIES - What do I do?

Notifying someone about changes to your meeting attendance is your responsibility!
 
Our meetings have catered dinners, so if you are unable to attend a meeting, or if your partner is unable to attend a designated Partner's Night, YOU MUST ADVISE us of your or your partner’s absence.  This also applies if you are attending the meeting but not dining.
 
There are two ways to do this, either record the information in advance in the "Apology Book" that is available at the book in table at each meeting or telephone 03-5222-2022.  An answering service operates out of hours.
  • All apologies must be made no later than 9.00AM on the Monday of the meeting (unless other arrangements were addressed in the Bulletin). 
  • If no apology is recorded by that time, the absentee member will be issued with an invoice to pay the Club the dinner fee of $25 for your non-attendance, and/or that of your partner if it is an official Partner's Night.
 
  • On "Partners Nights" it is a different arrangement as it will be assumed that your partner WILL BE attending unless you apologise for them!
Remember if you are bringing guests or your partner (to a non-partner night) you need to notify us of the extra number of persons who will be attending.
 
Absence when away on travel is not an excuse.  It is your reasonability to lodge your apology and it is recommended that this be recorded beforehand in the “Apology Book” to save you remembering each week whilst you are away.
