A few drops of rain and cloud cover didn't deter many of us from attending the fishNchips@Cosy.  Thank you to all those who came, and in particular those who brought along family and friends.  Pity about the non-swimming weather, but certainly the children were climbing trees and having a good play. We were able to introduce Kelly and Liam Binyon to real live Canadians Ken and Jeanette Beal and then presented Liam with his very own Akubra as he is departing shortly for his Canadian Youth Exchange.

With the the Book Fair, Cadel Evans ride, the Motor Show, Night Jar Parking and of course the Weekend BBQs, we are "fully engaged". The purpose of course is not to just make money, rather to raise and distribute funds to Rotary Projects and worthwhile causes.  And enjoy ourselves in the process.

I look forward to seeing you next week at Debbie and Mal Slater's home at 555 Great Ocean Road, Bellbrae for a combined club meeting & BBQ feast with the Rotary Club of Grovedale.

Watchout Canada!  Liam's on his way

By the time members read this, our 2016 outbound exchange student – Liam Binyon – will have arrived in Canada and been welcomed by an excited group of Rotarians from the Mississauga West club.
Despite the weather being unseasonably warm and an Ontario winter with almost no snow so far, Liam’s host club counsellor Betty Jo Parent has promised a warm coat will be on hand at the airport (although whether it fits a lean 17-year-old Aussie is another matter).
Liam will spend his first night getting to know his first host family – Young and Jennifer Ngo, and their children Minh and MaiLee. Betty Jo and several of his fellow inbound students also plan to stay around for as long as Liam can stay awake after more than 24 hours travel time. No doubt he’ll sleep well after they’ve departed.
During his first week, Jennifer will take him shopping for proper winter gear and help him set up his Canadian bank account into which the host club will pay his CAD$150 monthly allowance.
The schedule so far for Liam’s first month includes:

  • Tuesday 19 Jan – Attending Mississauga West Rotary Club’s weekly meeting and introducing himself
  • Saturday 23 Jan – Day trip to Toronto with Betty Jo
  • Thursday 4 Feb – First day at Streetsville Secondary School
  • Friday 5-Mon 8 Feb – Camp Wanakita attended by 17 inbound students and all new outbound students. Activities include snowshoeing, winter hiking and sleeping one night in a Quinzhee (a Canadian igloo)
  • Sunday 21 Feb – Announcement day when the outbound students find out where they are going, including one lucky Canuck heading down under
  • Friday 26-Sunday 28 Feb – Weekend trip to Haliburton with five fellow exchange students, Betty Jo and another Rotarian. Planned activities include skating on the lake, snowmobiling and dogsledding
  • Tuesday 1 Mar – Liam’s presentation to his host club as guest speaker.
Betty Jo advises the Mississauga West Rotary Club is very open and looking forward to Liam regularly attending meetings – and, with Young being the current Club President and Jennifer President Elect, getting to the meetings every Tuesday at 6.30pm should be a piece of cake.
She has also been working to finalise arrangements for Liam’s other host families with several families interested, especially after the positive example set by his predecessor, Tyler from New Zealand. Liam has big shoes to fill there but he’s more than up to it.
Members can find out more about the Mississauga West Rotary Club at www.rotary7080.org/mississaugawest where Liam’s presentation date is already listed.
“We truly are looking forward to your arrival and assisting in making this a most spectacular year,” writes Betty Jo.
“Our new outbound student, Jada Charles, goes to Streetsville Secondary School. She will meet you on your first day, get you to where you need to go and be a great resource for you at your new school. She tells me there is a buzz around you coming – so flaunt your accent.”
Stay tuned for more news about Liam’s Canadian adventures in future bulletins.

Volunteers Needed

Cadel Evans Road Race - Volunteers Needed.

Our Club has been asked by Cadel's Manager Jason Bakker, and the event organisers, , to assist with providing volunteers for the Cadel Evans Road Race in January.

Whilst January is a busy time in all of our lives, the more Rotarians, Friends, and Family that we are able to muster to help will be valuable as our Club continues negotiations to secure Cadel for a Sportspersons Fundraiser Event next year. If you a re a member of a local Probus Club and can possibly engange their members for this event then that would be of enourmous assistance to help our cause as well.

Gentsomes – Modified 4 Person Team Stableford

With Gentsomes, each team member tees off at each hole.

The captain selects the best tee shot, then each member drops his ball from this point and plays out the hole with his/her own ball. The selected drive is counted as the first shot of each of the team members for that particular hole.

There is one additional requirement. During the course of the round all player's drives must be used on 3 occasions, or as indicated by the organisers.

The method of scoring in Gentsomes is based on the popular Stableford format and prizes will be awarded for:
  • Team Stableford Score comprising the best 3 scores from each player for each hole
  • All players are eligible for NTP & Hole-in-One privileges, regardless of Tee shot restrictions.
  • Players without Official Handicaps will be allocated no more than 18.

RAWCS Working Trip Update

EXPRESSION of INTEREST REQUIRED

INTERNATIONAL RAWCS PROJECT  NUMBER 53 : VOLUNTEER APPEAL
Our club has the possibility of joining an experienced Rotary team leader, Barry Tennent from the Rotary Club of Rockhampton Fitzroy,  to work on schools and hospital buildings in Munda and Noro areas, Western Province, Solomon Islands early in 2016.
Barry has done 19 previous RAWCS projects, not just in the Solomons, but in Sri Lanka, PNG and Cambodia.
He has already worked at 15 different schools in this area of the Solomons and has found that most do not have basic drinking water, toilets, electricity or books for a library, so the needs are very real.

Gerard Mc Namara has already  put up his hand so we are seeking 3 more volunteers. An electrician and plumber would be wonderful but anyone with DYI experience or other trade skills will be welcome. If we can't find club members, perhaps you know "tradies" who would like to go?

TIMING: Sometime Last week of April or First week of May 2016 for 2 weeks. Weather is much the same all year round.
ACCOMODATION: At a resort (A/C in rooms) where all meals can be bought at the restaurant or can be purchased at local stalls and markets.
ANY FUN? Barry arranges to take teams to see the local sights during their time off.
FUNDING: We are hoping the club will subside some of the travel and accommodation costs but each volunteer will still need to contribute at least $1,500 plus buy their own food.

If you would like to volunteer for this wonderful project, please contact International Director, Gaynor Schols (Phone 0438 364 399)

Dinner Meeting Registration & Apologies

MEETING APOLOGIES - What do I do?

Notifying someone about changes to your meeting attendance is your responsibility!

Our meetings have catered dinners, so if you are unable to attend a meeting, or if your partner is unable to attend a designated Partner's Night, YOU MUST ADVISE us of your or your partner’s absence.  This also applies if you are attending the meeting but not dining.

There are two ways to do this, either record the information in advance in the "Apology Book" that is available at the book in table at each meeting or telephone 03-5222-2022.  An answering service operates out of hours.
  • All apologies must be made no later than 9.00AM on the Monday of the meeting (unless other arrangements were addressed in the Bulletin).
  • If no apology is recorded by that time, the absentee member will be issued with an invoice to pay the Club the dinner fee of $25 for your non-attendance, and/or that of your partner if it is an official Partner's Night.

  • On "Partners Nights" it is a different arrangement as it will be assumed that your partner WILL BE attending unless you apologise for them!
Remember if you are bringing guests or your partner (to a non-partner night) you need to notify us of the extra number of persons who will be attending.

Absence when away on travel is not an excuse.  It is your reasonability to lodge your apology and it is recommended that this be recorded beforehand in the “Apology Book” to save you remembering each week whilst you are away.
