Presidents Report

Bulletin No  5

From the President

On behalf of the Cub, I attended the first meeting of Group 9 and 10 Rotary Club presidents last Monday, at which a number of projects were discussed for information or seeking our support. Here are some snippets:

Ride the Bellarine
I know Greg will keep us up to date on this, but it is confirmed for Sunday 9 April 2017.  All local clubs are supporting for major fund raiser for Polio Plus.  We’re asked to ‘clear any other commitments’ as the event will need riders and volunteers.  Sponsors are also sought as are donations, which are tax deductible and club donations are counted in our RI Central budget.
The Great Moscow Circus – tickets
Thanks to DG Stephen we have some tickets for the show on Thursday 25 August we can sell as a fund raiser.  Stephen was given a bundle of tickets which have been evenly distributed amongst all Clubs, so we have ringside, premium and blue zone tickets.

Barwon Valley School Appeal
Geelong Central is seeking funds and hands on support to help out this special school which caters for special needs children through the Greater Geelong area – currently including 6 students from Torquay.
The specific project is to improve the outside play areas with play spaces that include sensory input – touch points, hidey holes, places to sit, astro turf etc.  At the moment they are fenced and not much more.
Preserve Planet Earth
We have previously had information about this District committee and program and are encouraged to work on a project and to have a club representative on the committee.  We are also asked to notify the committee of projects we are already doing as they are trying to put together a register of District wide projects. Our battery and bulb recycling come to mind.
District Conference Home Hosting
Please consider whether you can host visitors to our District over the weekend of the District Conference on 3 March – 1 April.  This is for bed and breakfast only and a way to help visiting Rotarians affray some of the costs of attending.  More details to come from District on this one, especially around how to register, but I think we should set up our own register now.  Any volunteers? Please let me know if you are interested.

Vice President's Report

I'm baaaack..........  Feather Duster Amanda has returned from retirement/coup to Chair the meeting whilst our esteemed President Lesley was attending a Group 9 & 10 Presidents meeting.  Did I finally get it right? Probably not.....

It is always a pleasure to catch up with Rose Hodge, the current Mayor of Surf Coast Shire.  Rose clearly loves her job, and despite a croaky throat, was still able to project her enthusiasm and optimism for the Surf Coast Shire.

As residents of the Shire and also as members of Rotary, we were given a first hand report of what is ahead of us in regards to Infrastructure, Population and Services that are the challenges to our growing towns.  It was particularly interesting to hear about outlying towns and regions and the Shire's expectation of their development. It was then like going back to the days of Rome when the local member met their electorate face to face and was subjected to grilling and enquiry.

So thank you Rose, you may well have felt you were fed to the lions, however you got the thumbs up from us all. 👍

Community Fitness Stations ....coming soon
A major project for Torquay Rotary this year is to install several fitness stations on the Torquay foreshore for the benefit of residents and visitors. There will be 4 stations each consisting of 2 elements of equipment. which will be situated on the walking track along the coast between Elephant Walk (near Zeally Bay Rd) and the carpark above the Surf Beach The equipment is currently being manufactured and will be erected prior to summer. Thanks to some generous corporate funding we are on the home stretch but still need more assistance to complete the project. You are invited to help us raise the final $$$$ to get the equipment in the ground
We hope you will support us in this fantastic project by pledging financial support and sharing this post with your friends. CLICK HERE TO HELP

Mock Job Interviews 23rd & 30th Aug

Many thanks to the 6 members who assisted on Tuesday at the Surf Coast Secondary College with the Mock Interviews they went well

You will recall in last weeks bulletin that we were approached by RC of Grovedale to assist with the Mock Job Interviews for Year 9 students at Grovedale College on Tuesday 23 August and Tuesday 30 August.

Grovedale really value our contribution as their club membership now precludes them from single handed catering for the needs of 160 students over 2 days as is the case this year.

The sessions are intended to run from about 9AM till lunch time on each day. Any assistance to help in this very worthy cause would be much appreciated, To date I have 4 volunteers from our Club but could still use more, so if you are able to assist can you please contact me ASAP on 0439 209036.

Thank you in advance for your help with the organisation of this event.
Chris Sims

11 Aug - Rotary Young Driver Awareness (RYDA)
The RYDA program is a road safety education program for 17 – 18 year old students.
This Rotary program was initiated 14 years ago by members in the northern suburbs of Sydney. Since then over 400,000 students across Australia and NZ have had the opportunity to attend this outstanding program for young people.

The RYDA program aims to reduce the number of teenagers killed and injured on our roads each year and is a one day school excursion which involves six interactive sessions presented by professional facilitators.  The program is designed to provide students with the knowledge, skills and attitudes that will contribute to their safe and responsible behaviour as drivers and passengers.

The RYDA program content is provided by not-for-profit organisation Road Safety Education and is funded by Rotary Clubs, a small student fee, and support from Local Government grants and local business sponsorship.
Earlier this year the Rotary Clubs in the Geelong area were contacted by Wayne Pecar, President of the Rotary Club of Queenscliff seeking pledges of funding from Rotary Clubs to assist in the launching of a RYDA Pilot Program in the Geelong area.  As a result the Board of the Rotary Club of Torquay agreed to a pledge of $200.00.
We have now been advised that RYDA is happening on Thursday 11th August at Beckley Park! The day is scheduled to commence at 8.30am and to go through until 2.30pm
At the moment three schools are participating , three Rotarians have expressed interest in being trained as facilitators for the program in the future, and a further three have offered to be on the RYDA organising committee . The program still needs more committee members and facilitators with experience as driving instructors or with working with young people. On 11th August the RYDA committee will need volunteers to guide student groups around the venue.
If you are able to attend on the 11th August and assist in any capacity it would be most appreciated if you could contact me as soon as possible.
Many thanks,   Chris Sims

Dinner Meeting Registration & Apologies

MEETING APOLOGIES - What do I do?

Notifying someone about changes to your meeting attendance is your responsibility!

Our meetings have catered dinners, so if you are unable to attend a meeting, or if your partner is unable to attend a designated Partner's Night, YOU MUST ADVISE us of your or your partner’s absence.  This also applies if you are attending the meeting but not dining.

There are two ways to do this, either record the information in advance in the "Apology Book" that is available at the book in table at each meeting or telephone 03-5222-2022.  An answering service operates out of hours.
  • All apologies must be made no later than 9.00AM on the Monday of the meeting (unless other arrangements were addressed in the Bulletin).
  • If no apology is recorded by that time, the absentee member will be issued with an invoice to pay the Club the dinner fee of $25 for your non-attendance, and/or that of your partner if it is an official Partner's Night.

  • On "Partners Nights" it is a different arrangement as it will be assumed that your partner WILL BE attending unless you apologise for them!
Remember if you are bringing guests or your partner (to a non-partner night) you need to notify us of the extra number of persons who will be attending.

Absence when away on travel is not an excuse.  It is your reasonability to lodge your apology and it is recommended that this be recorded beforehand in the “Apology Book” to save you remembering each week whilst you are away.
