Risk management – what does it mean for us and what do we need to do?
Considerable time was spent around the Board table last Monday night discussing the issues of risk management, insurance and all that. These are complex and sometimes difficult matters to understand, let alone implement the right processes for us as Rotarians. It is clear we need to prepare risk assessments for each of our events – this is actually non-negotiable. What this means and how we go about it we will discuss on Monday, but in the meantime you might like to take a look at the information on the District website.
Working with children check
Another question we need to answer is who has a current Working with children check. Linda Neale is setting up a register for us to record these and also police checks. A working with children check is a requirement for any of us working on projects or at events which involve children under the age of 18. It is a simple process, which I encourage you to do if you haven’t already. The information you need is all online here.
Our BBQ season is about to start
Our first BBQ is at Bunnings in support of Special Needs Kids. This one doesn’t use our BBQ but you will be asked your availability. The first Cowrie Market is 18th September so you are about to be asked for your availability (or not) through the season.
In preparation for the season, our club meeting on 12 September is dedicated to the BBQ trailer. More details to come, but the aim here is for us all to get a lesson (or a refresher) on setting up the BBQ, what to do during the BBQ, getting supplies and the take-down and cleaning. Should be fun JJ
The Board did decide on Monday to increase the price of a sausage in bread, with or without sauce, to $3. Amongst other things, our signage now needs updating.
Moscow Circus Tickets – at a much reduced price – any takers – make an offer?
We still have a bunch of tickets to The Great Moscow Circus on Thursday 25 August at the corner of Rossack Drive and Princes Highway Geelong, so if you’d like them – like to take the children, grand children, nephews, nieces and friends along, here is a great opportunity – just make an offer.
Shelter Box
In May 2016, Shelter Box and Rotary renewed their Project Partnership for another three years, making Shelter Box Rotary's disaster aid partner around the world.
Rotary's General Secretary John Hewko said: The partnership between Rotary and Shelter Box has provided a place of refuge to people facing some of the most difficult and uncertain moments in their lives. We are happy to renew this project partnership and honour our ongoing commitment to taking action to help communities devastated by disasters and conflict. Read more.
This evening we were given the inside mail on the National Broadband Network (NBN) by Sharyn Mierzejewski, principal of Lets Surf, our local telecommunications provider.
Words that we have all heard before, fibre, node, Malcolm, fixed wireless, green box, delay, when, (but not until now the word cost) - all were gelled into some sense and we are indeed the wiser. Speeds will be much much faster and there will be less time spent watching that little circle go around and around.....😡😡
We have 18 months to change over, after which the current system will close down and we will be unable to use the net. So, in order to avoid such disaster, Sharyn suggests we come into the store to register and we will be happily surfing the net thereafter.
Monday 29 August has been planned as a FIRESIDE CHAT night
This is where, we as Members & partners meet at various homes to share a meal & chat about our Club & ideas for the future
Please also start thinking about whether you will be attending the Fireside Chats with you partner or if you would like to invite any guests. You will have received an email on Thursday 18th Aug calling for registrations. Please register your response ASAP as this will help us allocate numbers and make this another great Torquay Rotary night.
There is much that goes on around the world within Rotary and I have not yet anyone who claims that they know everything about Rotary Foundation. So this column will provide some small snippets of Rotary info for you as well as some useful links where you can find out more.
A major project for Torquay Rotary this year is to install several fitness stations on the Torquay foreshore for the benefit of residents and visitors. There will be 4 stations each consisting of 2 elements of equipment. which will be situated on the walking track along the coast between Elephant Walk (near Zeally Bay Rd) and the carpark above the Surf Beach The equipment is currently being manufactured and will be erected prior to summer. Thanks to some generous corporate funding we are on the home stretch but still need more assistance to complete the project. You are invited to help us raise the final $$$$ to get the equipment in the ground
We hope you will support us in this fantastic project by pledging financial support and sharing this post with your friends. CLICK HERE TO HELP
Once again our Ambassador for Parkinsons, Peter Bollen will be participating in the annual "Walk in the Park" on Sunday 28 August, this year the team is "Bollens Blues". If you would like to join Peter and his family then this is your chance to celebrate and support people living with Parkinson’s. This leisurely walk takes place along the banks of the Yarra River. A range of fun, family activities at Federation Square will entertain kids and adults alike…and the pet pooch!

Please note: The assigned Chairperson for the evening is responsible for writing a short review on the topic presented by the guest speaker of the night and for emailing the review to the Bulletin editor by noon of the following Wednesday
Notifying someone about changes to your meeting attendance is your responsibility!
Our meetings have catered dinners, so if you are unable to attend a meeting, or if your partner is unable to attend a designated Partner's Night, YOU MUST ADVISE us of your or your partner’s absence. This also applies if you are attending the meeting but not dining.
There are two ways to do this, either record the information in advance in the "Apology Book" that is available at the book in table at each meeting or telephone 03-5222-2022. An answering service operates out of hours.
All apologies must be made no later than 9.00AM on the Monday of the meeting (unless other arrangements were addressed in the Bulletin).
If no apology is recorded by that time, the absentee member will be issued with an invoice to pay the Club the dinner fee of $25 for your non-attendance, and/or that of your partner if it is an official Partner's Night.
On "Partners Nights" it is a different arrangement as it will be assumed that your partner WILL BE attending unless you apologise for them!
Remember if you are bringing guests or your partner (to a non-partner night) you need to notify us of the extra number of persons who will be attending.
Absence when away on travel is not an excuse. It is your reasonability to lodge your apology and it is recommended that this be recorded beforehand in the “Apology Book” to save you remembering each week whilst you are away.
