Bulletin No  16

From the President

Hello again from Miami - week three of four weeks on the sunny Gold Coast.

Rotary Club of Broadbeach
Rob and I attended the meeting of the Rotary Club of Broadbeach this week. They are a club of about 60 members, all men, although they have previously had women members - just none at the moment. They run some regular fund-raising activities including a sausage sizzle at Bunnings every Friday which brings in around $1000 per week and a bi-weekly car boot sale which brings in about $4000 each fortnight.
The club has a close relationship with the local police force, with several officers club members.  In recognition of this and the job the police do, they run the Police Officer of the Year award, which was presented just last week to an officer (Deb), the liaison officer with a Gold Coast school, who demonstrated outstanding acts of courtesy, kindness, understanding, compassion, courage and devotion to duty during the last 12 months.

The long road from a broken heart
The guest speaker was the super inspirational Jeremy Scott, who recently completed a 52,000 km bike ride (cycle that is) from London to Auckland to raise awareness and funds for the Australian and NZ Heart Foundations. Jeremy’s motivation stems from having cardiac surgery at age 4 to correct a hole in his heart and his intent to not just accept this and continue his ‘normal’ life as an architect but to do something in recognition and appreciation of the opportunity he was given by this life-saving surgery.
His presentation, and book of photos he has now published, is called ‘The long road from a broken heart’. We heard about some amazing experiences he had as he rode across Europe, China, Asia, Australasia and ultimately home to Auckland. Interestingly though, he said the most difficult part was to get up when his alarm went off in London on day one and actually start the ride. He talked about not wanting to spend the rest of his life regretting not even having a go. As I said – super-inspirational.

October Board meeting – cancelled
Due not only to my absence but that of a number of board members, it was unlikely a quorum would be reached, so the Board meeting scheduled for 17 October was cancelled.  If you have items you would like the Board to consider, we will meet next on Monday 21 November.

World Polio Day – Monday 24 October, 2016
You have heard me say this before but I am really keen for us to provide as much support as we can to the Rotary Foundation for projects and grants, and especially to aid in the eradication of polio.
With the emergence of new wild polio virus in Nigeria recently, the necessity of continued focus on this is heightened. On Monday 24th, a live event will be streamed on this website – so you may find time to take a look and consider ways in which we can further our support.  When you go to this site you will also find ways to assist as an individual. One way is as easy as sharing on Facebook, which I have just done.

Donations in Kind – District 9780 appeal
Based in Geelong, this District project is seeking not just goods but, for the first time, financial support. In the past 12 months they have shipped 4 - 40 foot containers and 16 - 20 foot containers with shipping and road freight costs of $96,000.  The countries they have shipped to are Sri Lanka, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Tonga, West Kenya and Fiji.  The items they need are clothing in good condition, school books (primary and secondary), school equipment - pencils, rulers, crayons etc., blankets, crockery, cutlery, pumps and patches for bikes, hospital beds and medical equipment.

Chairmans Report - Dr Merv Ferdinands

Despite being down on numbers an enthusiastic and lively crew gathered for what turned out to be an informative and entertaining meeting.
We welcomed back ‘into the fold’ Linda Neale , Michael Reed gave us a progress report on the installation of the Rotary Fitness Trail, Gail Chrisfield reported on her appointment to the District 9780 Youth Exchange Committee , and in his inimitable manner Bruce Smith extracted some cash with the AFL providing its usual supply of fines material.
Chairperson Chris introduced Dr Merv Ferdinands FRANZCO MBBS (Hons) our guest speaker for the night. Merv is a Cataract and Refractive Surgeon, Consultant Ophthamologist and Director, Geelong Eye Centre at Epworth Hospital Geelong. He lives on the Surf Coast with his wife and three children.
His talk centred on the three eye conditions:
  • Macular Degeneration
  • Glaucoma
  • Cataract
For each condition Merv’s PowerPoint presentation outlined just what each condition was, the Risk Factors associated with each one, the symptoms of each, the latest treatments that are available all aimed at lowering eye pressure, and newer advances being developed that are very exciting. The common factor is that early detection of all eye disease is the key.
His general advice included
  • Get regular eye tests in the community
  • Don’t smoke
  • Have a healthy lifestyle and exercise
  • Maintain a well balanced diet
He finished with “There is Great Hope!”
The interest and attention by all of the club members present was evidenced by the large number and range of the questions that followed. Merv’s knowledge and repute in this medical field was complemented by an easy manner in replying to the questions that enhanced an impressive presentation.

The Piggy Bank Appeal brings home the bacon for Very Special Kids
A huge $1,043,697 has been raised in the 2016 Piggy Bank Appeal to help the 900 Victorian families we support who are caring for a child with a life-threatening condition.
Throughout the Appeal, our five giant piggy banks traveled 7,238 kilometres across Victoria collecting donations with the support of 357 volunteers, 88 ALH Group venues, 277 Commonwealth Banks and many other businesses and organisations.

A special thank you from the CEO
We are extremely grateful for the generous support of our corporate partners, our volunteers, and the Victorian community, for enabling us to care for more than 900 families across the state.
While the future is uncertain for many of these families and their children, one thing they can rely on is that Very Special Kids will be there to offer respite and end-of-life care through the hospice, and practical and emotional support.
It costs $7million per year to operate Very Special Kids and all services are provided  free of charge. Thank you for helping us give these families that certainty.

Michael Wasley
Very Special Kids CEO
Awards night to celebrate all things piggy!
A Piggy Bank Appeal awards night was held to thank the incredible Commonwealth Bank branches, ALH Group venues, businesses and community groups that fundraise for us, and of course our wonderful volunteers.

The Road Home Project

The Road Home – a project to end homelessness locally
A House refers to a building in which someone lives. A home refers to any location that a person thinks of as the place where they live
and that belongs to them.

To end an episode of homelessness a person needs a house, to end the cycle of homelessness a person needs a home.
The Road Home aims to raise awareness of homelessness and to provide means to assist people to turn a house into a home, by
providing dignity, warmth and identity to people experiencing homelessness.
To achieve this result, the Road Home is working with other services and initiatives to best facilitate the distribution of blankets and
hygiene products to ensure that people that are experiencing homelessness have access to the basic essential items that we all utilise
on a regular basis.
Between April and September we will be conducting a collection of these Bedding and Hygiene items from many Businesses and
Organisations throughout Geelong and wish to ask you if you are interested in volunteering to collect these items on our behalf in
your local area, we will collect them from you and distribute to the service agencies.
The Road Home project will be holding individual events on a bi-monthly basis in an effort to continue to raise awareness behind
a person becoming Homeless and giving them support.
We are organizing a car sleep out for December, please let me know if you are interested in helping with this.
Also we will be holding a Dinner with presentations from many Geelong services that support those experiencing homelessness in
Late March or early April 2017 and wish to know if you are interested in attending.
Finally another Big aim is to combine forces with other like-minded groups and create a shelter in Geelong for those who have no
home to go to.
Please reply and advise if you are interested in supporting this ongoing project in any way you can.

Yours Sincerely

Richard Walter

Dinner Meeting Registration & Apologies

MEETING APOLOGIES - What do I do?

Notifying someone about changes to your meeting attendance is your responsibility!

Our meetings have catered dinners, so if you are unable to attend a meeting, or if your partner is unable to attend a designated Partner's Night, YOU MUST ADVISE us of your or your partner’s absence.  This also applies if you are attending the meeting but not dining.

There are two ways to do this, either record the information in advance in the "Apology Book" that is available at the book in table at each meeting or telephone 03-5222-2022.  An answering service operates out of hours.
  • All apologies must be made no later than 9.00AM on the Monday of the meeting (unless other arrangements were addressed in the Bulletin).
  • If no apology is recorded by that time, the absentee member will be issued with an invoice to pay the Club the dinner fee of $25 for your non-attendance, and/or that of your partner if it is an official Partner's Night.

  • On "Partners Nights" it is a different arrangement as it will be assumed that your partner WILL BE attending unless you apologise for them!
Remember if you are bringing guests or your partner (to a non-partner night) you need to notify us of the extra number of persons who will be attending.

Absence when away on travel is not an excuse.  It is your reasonability to lodge your apology and it is recommended that this be recorded beforehand in the “Apology Book” to save you remembering each week whilst you are away.
