Thank you again to all members for the confidence you show in electing me to lead the club. As I said on Sunday, it is truly an honour and a privilege. I’d also like to reiterate the Club’s thanks and appreciation to Past President Amanda for all her efforts last year.
Rotary Serving Humanity – our theme for this year
If you’re not sure what this really means, take a look at RI President John Germ explaining what he means by Rotary Serving Humanity and why he says it's capitalising on what we do best - service
So now we need to get down to business.
Committees
Most members have nominated your preferred committee(s) for which I thank you. Of course, if you’d like to change, it's not too late.
Our meeting on Monday 9 July is set aside for Committees to meet and plan for the coming year. About every sixth meeting will be devoted to Committees, the idea being you meet and discuss committee issues during our normal meeting time, over the meal and longer if you need.
Board planning for 2016-2017
Our high level goals for the year have been mapped out by the Board and appear on the Rotary International website - https://www.rotary.org . I encourage all members to check out this site and register if you haven’t already, as this is where our achievements will be recorded as the year progresses.
When you go on there, you will see listed 17 projects we plan to complete over the next 12 months. There are sure to be more - these are just the ones the Board has identified at this stage. Each Director will lead the activities and projects in their avenue of service and keep us up to date on progress and, of course, involvement of members as needed.
District Directory 2016 – 2017
This year the Directory is electronic and found on the District website. You might want to bookmark this site on your computers and ‘pin’ it to the home screen of your mobile device so it is at your fingertips at all times. If you’d like to know how to do this (maybe what it even means) please just yell out, I’ll be happy to help.
Official visit or District Governor Stephen Lamont and Gaye – Monday 25 July, 2016
Please put this date into your calendars as it is an important meeting for our Club and it would be great to have a good attendance, with partners invited of course.
I hope most board members will be available to meet with Stephen prior to the club meeting.
Crowd Funding for Torquay Rotary Fitness Stations
You can now help fund this major project, and invite your friends to do the same on Bendigo Bank Communities, a new crowd funding platform specifically for funding community projects.
I have had this project set up as a bit of a test for us, but also to see if we can use crowd funding to boost our funds for the exercise stations. All you do is go to Communities, register, then pledge to our project and / or share it with your friends on Facebook.
Kate Hirst, Community Manager for Communities will be our guest speaker on 18 July and explain it all for us.
The wheels of Progress turn slowly but good things come to those who wait !!!
Here is an update on our 2 large forthcoming Construction Projects
a: Fitness Trail : Rotarian Ben Smith and I had a very constructive meeting with Phil Brown ,Acting Foreman GORCC and finalised the construction details for this project , It was agreed Rotary would order and pay for the equipment. Current delivery date is July 26 in Melb. Ben Smith will arrange to collect it from the Fabrication Factory, transport it to Torquay where it will be stored by GORRC until required for installation.
In the meantime GORRC will arrange for the preparation of the sites including any necessary excavation, installation of concrete bases, suitable cover over the concrete and framework to stop the spreading of loose material. Rotary will then install the frames of the different pieces of equipment at each site.
b. Trailer Storage Shed:Surf Coast Shire approval has now been granted for our ( Lions and Rotary) preferred site at the Recreation Reserve.
The next step in the process will be to meet with the Lions Club to finalise the Design and get quotes for the construction of the shed.
Rotarian Geoff Dawson has kindly volunteered to lead the process on our behalf.
Any other member who wishes to volunteer to help Geoff will be most welcome.
It has been assumed that Mal Slater, should he ever return, will be our QA manager!!
Instead of our regular Monday night meeting could you please reserve Tuesday night the 9th of August for an exciting, extra special, official tour of the new Geelong Library (seen at left)
This will be followed by a dinner somewhere in Geelong.
The RYDA program is a road safety education program for 17 – 18 year old students.
This Rotary program was initiated 14 years ago by members in the northern suburbs of Sydney. Since then over 400,000 students across Australia and NZ have had the opportunity to attend this outstanding program for young people.
The RYDA program aims to reduce the number of teenagers killed and injured on our roads each year and is a one day school excursion which involves six interactive sessions presented by professional facilitators. The program is designed to provide students with the knowledge, skills and attitudes that will contribute to their safe and responsible behaviour as drivers and passengers.
The RYDA program content is provided by not-for-profit organisation Road Safety Education and is funded by Rotary Clubs, a small student fee, and support from Local Government grants and local business sponsorship.
Earlier this year the Rotary Clubs in the Geelong area were contacted by Wayne Pecar, President of the Rotary Club of Queenscliff seeking pledges of funding from Rotary Clubs to assist in the launching of a RYDA Pilot Program in the Geelong area. As a result the Board of the Rotary Club of Torquay agreed to a pledge of $200.00.
We have now been advised that RYDA is happening on Thursday 11th August at Beckley Park! The day is scheduled to commence at 8.30am and to go through until 2.30pm
At the moment three schools are participating , three Rotarians have expressed interest in being trained as facilitators for the program in the future, and a further three have offered to be on the RYDA organising committee . The program still needs more committee members and facilitators with experience as driving instructors or with working with young people. On 11th August the RYDA committee will need volunteers to guide student groups around the venue.
If you are able to attend on the 11th August and assist in any capacity it would be most appreciated if you could contact me as soon as possible.

OFFICIAL TOUR of NEW GEELONG LIBRARY and DINNER AFTER
Please note: The assigned Chairperson for the evening is responsible for writing a short review on the topic presented by the guest speaker of the night and for emailing the review to the Bulletin editor by noon of the following Wednesday
Notifying someone about changes to your meeting attendance is your responsibility!
Our meetings have catered dinners, so if you are unable to attend a meeting, or if your partner is unable to attend a designated Partner's Night, YOU MUST ADVISE us of your or your partner’s absence. This also applies if you are attending the meeting but not dining.
There are two ways to do this, either record the information in advance in the "Apology Book" that is available at the book in table at each meeting or telephone 03-5222-2022. An answering service operates out of hours.
All apologies must be made no later than 9.00AM on the Monday of the meeting (unless other arrangements were addressed in the Bulletin).
If no apology is recorded by that time, the absentee member will be issued with an invoice to pay the Club the dinner fee of $25 for your non-attendance, and/or that of your partner if it is an official Partner's Night.
On "Partners Nights" it is a different arrangement as it will be assumed that your partner WILL BE attending unless you apologise for them!
Remember if you are bringing guests or your partner (to a non-partner night) you need to notify us of the extra number of persons who will be attending.
Absence when away on travel is not an excuse. It is your reasonability to lodge your apology and it is recommended that this be recorded beforehand in the “Apology Book” to save you remembering each week whilst you are away.
