Bulletin No 17

From the President

Hello again from …..Torquay, Victoria. Yes as you read this we are home and I am looking forward to joining you at our Cup Eve meeting. Don't forget to Accept or Decline for you and your Partner via the Clubrunner email you received last Tuesday...........you have until 9.00am Monday.

I have just completed our Club’s quarterly report for the District, and looking at our list of achievements already and our plans, I want to say thank you to everyone for your efforts. Here’s a summary:

Rotary Foundation

The combined portfolios of Youth Services and The Rotary Foundation are working in conjunction with the Surf Secondary College and the State Government FREEZA program in the production of an Open Mic show to be part of the Club’s celebration of The Rotary Foundation centenary. Early plans are to run the event in May 2017. Watch this space!

Community Service:
Delivery, construction and commencement of the installation of the Rotary Fitness Stations on the Torquay Foreshore in conjunction with GORRC. It is expected the stations will all be installed in the coming weeks. After 2 years of commitment and with sponsorship assistance, the $23,000 project is nearing completion.
Our BBQ 'Sausage Sizzle' season has commenced, raising funds for the club, which will be used to donate to local, district and international community projects.
We provided an Aussie BBQ meal for 30 participants in a men’s cancer retreat in Anglesea on Saturday 8th October
Torquay Rotary Motorshow – Sunday 12 February 2017 – plans are well underway for this major annual community event and fundraiser.

Youth Activities:
Youth Exchange - outbound - Gail Chrisfield continued her good work as Liam’s YEP counsellor and overall it appears to be a successful exchange. Gail was appointed to the District 9780 Youth Exchange Committee and we wish her well.
Members of the club participated in the Mock Interviews at Grovedale College and Surf Coast Secondary College.
In September the Club complied with the requirements of the QBE Sexual Abuse Liability Insurance Questionnaire and initiated a review of the Working With Children and Police Checks.
International Service:

$5940 AU provided for the purchase and installation of 3 Skyjuice water filters at Awake and Shine school in India in conjunction with the RC of Benalla who will be supervising and reporting on this project

$1000 contributed to the Cambodia Water Global Grant
$1000 donated to Shelterbox to aid Haiti victims of Hurricane Matthew

Vocational Service:

Vocational visit by club members to the Geelong Library.
The Family of Rotary/Fun Activities/Rotary Days:
Hat Day and support for Lift the Lid in support of Mental Illness awareness
Fireside chats in August
Joint meeting with Belmont RC
It’s quite a list and I look forward to what we can achieve together in the next quarter.

Chairmans Report - Green Energy Options

On Monday night we enjoyed a presentation, and Q and A with Rory Tonkin from Green Energy Options, a local Torquay business specialising in solar power. We were given an overview of new technologies and developments in the solar industry, focusing on solar storage batteries and micro-inverters. Both these products offer customers the ability to get more value from their solar panels and will play a large role in the future of residential energy use in the future.

We were also given a valuable insight into the financial benefits of solar in a commercial setting, and saw how many smart businesses are directly cutting their daytime electricity use with solar panels, and managing to pay the system off in 3-5 years. This appears to be a rapidly growing part of the market and offers a significant cost saving to businesses, while at the same time reducing demand for fossil fuel based electricity, a definite win-win scenario.

The Road Home Project

The Road Home – a project to end homelessness locally

A House refers to a building in which someone lives. A home refers to any location that a person thinks of as the place where they live

and that belongs to them.

To end an episode of homelessness a person needs a house, to end the cycle of homelessness a person needs a home.

The Road Home aims to raise awareness of homelessness and to provide means to assist people to turn a house into a home, by

providing dignity, warmth and identity to people experiencing homelessness.

To achieve this result, the Road Home is working with other services and initiatives to best facilitate the distribution of blankets and

hygiene products to ensure that people that are experiencing homelessness have access to the basic essential items that we all utilise

on a regular basis.

Between April and September we will be conducting a collection of these Bedding and Hygiene items from many Businesses and

Organisations throughout Geelong and wish to ask you if you are interested in volunteering to collect these items on our behalf in

your local area, we will collect them from you and distribute to the service agencies.

The Road Home project will be holding individual events on a bi-monthly basis in an effort to continue to raise awareness behind

a person becoming Homeless and giving them support.

We are organizing a car sleep out for December, please let me know if you are interested in helping with this.

Also we will be holding a Dinner with presentations from many Geelong services that support those experiencing homelessness in

Late March or early April 2017 and wish to know if you are interested in attending.

Finally another Big aim is to combine forces with other like-minded groups and create a shelter in Geelong for those who have no

home to go to.

Please reply and advise if you are interested in supporting this ongoing project in any way you can.

Volunteers Needed Nov 12th

GET INVOLVED IN THE FESTIVITIES OF GALA DAY!

This year Barwon Health Foundation’s iconic Gala Day will celebrate its 100^th year on Saturday 12 November 2016!

Gala Day is all about celebrating our community and is an opportunity for Barwon Health to provide the community with a family fun day out! The festivities will begin in Malop Street with entertainment and activities from 2pm – 7pm, followed by a colourful and festive twilight parade through central Geelong from 7.30pm finishing at the iconic Geelong Christmas Tree.

Volunteering at Gala Day is a great way to see the festivities up close! We need your help with the following activities;

Parade Marshal: Assist with directing pedestrians along the parade route, ensuring the safety of both patrons and parade entrants from 6:45pm - 9pm.
Parade Participant: Sell pinwheels to the crowd and tin shake while walking in the parade from 6.45pm – 9pm.
Merchandise Seller: In pairs, sell #projectlove merchandise from mobile merchandise boxes along the parade route from 6pm - 9pm.
Children’s Activities: Assist with children’s activities on Malop Street from 2pm – 7pm. Activities include gingerbread man making, plaster mould painting, pinwheel making, sports activity area and an arts and craft table. A WWCC is required if you choose to help with these children’s activities.

You must be over the age of 16 to volunteer.

Once you have registered, information about your activity, Gala Day caps and a high visibility vests will be available for volunteers to collect from the Barwon Health Foundation Office, 283 Ryrie Street, Geelong during the following times:

Tuesday 8^th November, anytime between 8.30am - 6pm

Thursday 10^th November, anytime between 8.30am – 6pm

(If you are unavailable during these times, please contact us directly to organise an alternative time)

Most football followers have called out the umpires at some time (if not weekly). Mark discusses the way in which the AFL approaches umpiring and the rational for decisions.

29^th November Malcolm Baird Rotary Action Group Against Child Slavery

Malcolm speaks about the horrors and impact of child slavery on behalf of RAGACS. He spoke at the International Convention to a break-out group and the impact was significant.

Surf Coast Shire Australia Day Awards 2017

On Australia Day we come together as a nation to celebrate the things that make our

country great: the people, the land, our diversity, sense of a fair go, lifestyle and freedoms.

We reflect on our national journey. We commit to making our country even better in the future.

The Australia Day Citizen, Young Citizen and Community Event of the Year Awards are presented annually to local citizens

and groups who make an extraordinary contribution to our local community.

The awards are administered by Surf Coast Shire Council on behalf of the National Australia Day Council and are issued at

one of the celebratory events held across the shire on 26 January 2017.

Anyone can nominate an individual or group who demonstrate:

- Excellence in their field or interest

- Significant contribution to Surf Coast Shire at the local community level, and

- An inspirational role model for Surf Coast Shire citizens.

Award Categories

Nominations for Citizen of the Year must be Australian citizens, over 27 years of age, who live or work in

Surf Coast Shire and have made a noteworthy contribution during the current year and/or given outstanding

service to the local community over a number of years including:

• demonstrates commitment to mproving the community

• their contributions are completed on a voluntary basis or exceed the normal requirements of the person’s paid work

• accepts civic responsibility

• provides a positive role model for others

• actively addresses local issues

• is law abiding.

Nominations for Young Citizen of the Year

- must be Australian citizens, under 27 years of age,

- who live or work in Surf Coast Shire and have made a noteworthy contribution during the current year and/or given outstanding service to the local community over a number of years including:

• active in youth or other activities in the local community

• leading a balanced life

• loyal to family/community

• is caring, compassionate and sharing

• shows outstanding achievement in academic, sporting, cultural, environment, civic responsibility and the like

• is law abiding.

Community Event of the Year

is bestowed upon an individual, organisation or community group that has staged a noteworthy event during 2016. Events should have:

• provided a benefit for local people, the local environment, local tourism or local culture

• demonstrated excellence in organising a safe and sustainable event

• involved local people through organising or attending

• reflected the spirit of what makes Surf Coast Shire great.

MEETING APOLOGIES - What do I do?

Notifying someone about changes to your meeting attendance is your responsibility!

Our meetings have catered dinners, so if you are unable to attend a meeting, or if your partner is unable to attend a designated Partner's Night, YOU MUST ADVISE us of your or your partner’s absence. This also applies if you are attending the meeting but not dining.

There are two ways to do this, either record the information in advance in the "Apology Book" that is available at the book in table at each meeting or telephone 03-5222-2022. An answering service operates out of hours.

All apologies must be made no later than 9.00AM on the Monday of the meeting (unless other arrangements were addressed in the Bulletin).
If no apology is recorded by that time, the absentee member will be issued with an invoice to pay the Club the dinner fee of $25 for your non-attendance, and/or that of your partner if it is an official Partner's Night.

On "Partners Nights" it is a different arrangement as it will be assumed that your partner WILL BE attending unless you apologise for them!

Remember if you are bringing guests or your partner (to a non-partner night) you need to notify us of the extra number of persons who will be attending.

Absence when away on travel is not an excuse. It is your reasonability to lodge your apology and it is recommended that this be recorded beforehand in the “Apology Book” to save you remembering each week whilst you are away.
