We welcomed Kate Hirst, Community Manager for Bendigo Bank Communities to our meeting on Monday. Kate explained Bendigo Bank Communities, a new crowd funding and community collaboration site, outlining the background to the site as part of the bank’s support for local communities and the fact this is a site specifically for community projects.
Now we have our Torquay Fitness Stations project on Communities, I encourage you all to go to the site and get involved. This might be to share on Social Media, to email it to your contacts, to make a financial pledge or an offer of your time. Its really important we get the get the message out there to as many people as we can and encourage others to help us raise the funds for this project.
Official visit by District Governor Stephen Lamont – 25 July, 2016
We look forward to welcoming Stephen, Gaye and Assistant Governor Ross Taylor next Monday. As this is a partner’s night, please place an apology if your partner is not attending. The board will meet with Stephen and Ross prior to our club meeting, so if you have any issues you would like us to raise with them, please send them through.
Feedback from the board meeting – 18 July, 2016
Club Strategic Planning
We agreed to start the process to develop a strategic plan for our Club and to seek District support to do so. I will start this process by finding out how we start and with whom. If you have a particular interest in assisting with this project your help will be most welcome.
Rotary International legislative changes
A committee led by Chris Sims and including Bruce Smith, Peter Bollen, Linda Neale and I will look into all the details and report back to members regarding the suggested changes, implications and processes and then provide to you our thoughts and recommendations. Please contact any committee member with any input and thoughts you have as this is a really important piece for the Club and it is vital all views are heard and taken into consideration.
Christmas function and donations to a Rotary project
Following last year’s Christmas function, there was a suggestion made that rather than us all purchasing ‘Kris Kringle’ gifts which may or may not be of value to the recipient, we each make a donation to a Rotary project of our choice. This was agreed to by the Board and will be followed up with further details about how we actually do this – maybe we create a card for the purpose or use an existing process.
We will, of course, still have a Christmas function with lots of the normal fun and frivolity.

Please remember that the District Governors Visit tomorrow night 25th July is an official Partners Night so it will be assumed that you & your partner will be attending and you will be expected to pay for both meals. If either or both of you are unable to attend you will need to apologise through David Mitchells office to avoid this cost
Thanks to all our members who have volunteered to assist with the Surf Coast Secondary College for their upcoming Mock Interviews to be held on Tuesday 26th July 2016.
The day will start with an induction at 8.30 am till about 8.50 am for our interviewers, and finish by 3.00 pm at the latest. Morning tea & lunch will be provided.
You may recall that last year we were approached by RC of Grovedale to assist with the Mock Job Interviews for Year 9 students at Grovedale College. This was invaluable, as the Grovedale membership now precludes the Club from single handed catering for the needs of 160 students over 2 days as is the case this year.
John McGibbon Youth Director from Grovedale Rotary Club is once again seeking the assistance of about 6 volunteers our club with this task Toby Kidd is co-ordinating the interview program at the College and has asked if the following dates would be suitable: Tuesday 23 August and Tuesday 30 August. The sessions are intended to run from about 9AM till lunch time on each day. Any assistance to help in this very worthy cause would be much appreciated, if you are able to assist can you please contact me ASAP on 0439 209036.
Thank you in advance for your help with the organisation of this event.
The RYDA program is a road safety education program for 17 – 18 year old students.
This Rotary program was initiated 14 years ago by members in the northern suburbs of Sydney. Since then over 400,000 students across Australia and NZ have had the opportunity to attend this outstanding program for young people.
The RYDA program aims to reduce the number of teenagers killed and injured on our roads each year and is a one day school excursion which involves six interactive sessions presented by professional facilitators. The program is designed to provide students with the knowledge, skills and attitudes that will contribute to their safe and responsible behaviour as drivers and passengers.
The RYDA program content is provided by not-for-profit organisation Road Safety Education and is funded by Rotary Clubs, a small student fee, and support from Local Government grants and local business sponsorship.
Earlier this year the Rotary Clubs in the Geelong area were contacted by Wayne Pecar, President of the Rotary Club of Queenscliff seeking pledges of funding from Rotary Clubs to assist in the launching of a RYDA Pilot Program in the Geelong area. As a result the Board of the Rotary Club of Torquay agreed to a pledge of $200.00.
We have now been advised that RYDA is happening on Thursday 11th August at Beckley Park! The day is scheduled to commence at 8.30am and to go through until 2.30pm
At the moment three schools are participating , three Rotarians have expressed interest in being trained as facilitators for the program in the future, and a further three have offered to be on the RYDA organising committee . The program still needs more committee members and facilitators with experience as driving instructors or with working with young people. On 11th August the RYDA committee will need volunteers to guide student groups around the venue.
If you are able to attend on the 11th August and assist in any capacity it would be most appreciated if you could contact me as soon as possible.
Once again our Ambassador for Parkinsons, Peter Bollen will be participating in the annual "Walk in the Park" on Sunday 28 August, this year the team is "Bollens Blues".
If you would like to join Peter and his family then this is your chance to celebrate and support people living with Parkinson’s. This leisurely walk takes place along the banks of the Yarra River. A range of fun, family activities at Federation Square will entertain kids and adults alike…and the pet pooch!

Notifying someone about changes to your meeting attendance is your responsibility!
Our meetings have catered dinners, so if you are unable to attend a meeting, or if your partner is unable to attend a designated Partner's Night, YOU MUST ADVISE us of your or your partner’s absence. This also applies if you are attending the meeting but not dining.
There are two ways to do this, either record the information in advance in the "Apology Book" that is available at the book in table at each meeting or telephone 03-5222-2022. An answering service operates out of hours.
All apologies must be made no later than 9.00AM on the Monday of the meeting (unless other arrangements were addressed in the Bulletin).
If no apology is recorded by that time, the absentee member will be issued with an invoice to pay the Club the dinner fee of $25 for your non-attendance, and/or that of your partner if it is an official Partner's Night.
On "Partners Nights" it is a different arrangement as it will be assumed that your partner WILL BE attending unless you apologise for them!
Remember if you are bringing guests or your partner (to a non-partner night) you need to notify us of the extra number of persons who will be attending.
Absence when away on travel is not an excuse. It is your reasonability to lodge your apology and it is recommended that this be recorded beforehand in the “Apology Book” to save you remembering each week whilst you are away.
