Bulletin No  10

From the President

It was a pleasure to welcome AG Ross Taylor to our meeting last week.  Ross updated us on a number of really important Rotary Initiatives:
RYDA – the first program held in Geelong in August was a great success, with over 200 students now booked in for a subsequent event.
Any member who would like to get more involved is invited to contact Ross, as the RYDA Committee needs assistance by way of additional
members. As you know, this program was initiated by the Rotary Club of Queenscliffe but is now much bigger then they can handle alone.
Please give this your consideration.
LIFT THE LID on mental health - 7 October 2016  – this has previously been mentioned in the bulletin and is a key project raising
awareness and funds for mental illness, and especially seeks to raise funds from the general public.  I invite you to watch this video
which explains this Australian Rotary Health project.  I would also like us to make an October meeting our ‘Hat Day’ to raise some
funds – perhaps this could be the theme for the meeting on 3 October with Rotary Club of Belmont.
Ride the Bellarine – this will now be totally organised by the combined Rotary Clubs and therefore covered by our Rotary insurance.
Presentation of Club Per Capita Achievement for 2015-2016 – congratulations to PP Amanda and all members for our achievement
of a per capita $US153.09 to the Rotary Foundation. This is a great effort and one I hope we will match and even better this year.
With two new cases of Polio being detected in Africa recently, we cannot yet take our eyes off the importance of raising funds for the
eradication of polio. We should also remember we can apply for grants for our own projects from funds we donate.
Thanks to Chris Sims who will attend the Rotary Foundation Grants Qualifying Seminar in Ararat on 16 October, thereby ensuring our
eligibility to apply for local grants next year.
It’s BBQ Season - As we launch into the next season may I say thank you to all members, partners and friends who will help out over
the coming months. As we know, this is a major source of income for us, and a key way in which we put our Rotary brand out into the
local community.  Please do ensure the risk assessments are completed for each event and any risks addressed as efficiently as we
can - and have a good time.

Chairmans Report

Karli Mynott - Hero Town Geelong

Last Monday Karli Mynott (Brians Daughter) presented to the Club all about the Hero Town Program which they are
currently rolling out in the Geelong Region as a part of the world wide Hero Town organisation.

The Program was developed a result of findings from the renowned Stanford Prison Experiment (SPE) which was a
study of the psychological effects of becoming a prisoner or prison guard. The experiment was conducted at Stanford
University on August 14–20, 1971, by a team of researchers led by psychology professor Philip Zimbardo using college
students. It was funded by the U.S. Office of Naval Research and was of interest to both the U.S. Navy and Marine
Corps as an investigation into the causes of conflict between military guards and prisoners. The experiment is a classic
study on the psychology of imprisonment and is a topic covered in most introductory psychology textbooks.

The aim of the Hero Town program is to empower individuals to overcome the challenges that face us every day so that
they can become an every day hero in their own community.

"Hero Squads" are a group of people that come together to find ways to increase pro social behaviour in their community
through their own actions and the actions of their group.
This can be done in a variety of ways, such as: discussion groups; events; peer support; hosting a Hero Day; modelling
"Up-Stander" behaviour; and creating material and resources to encourage pro social behaviour for their community/school.

This is achieved via 3 Steps in the Program:-

1 UNDERSTAND - The Hero's Journey
Recognise how life is not a random assortment of positive and negative events. Rather, it follows a pattern that that begins with
accepting a call to adventure and facing challenges. Everyday heroes realise they are the authors of their story.

FOSTER A GROWTH MINDSET
The set of beliefs we have about ourselves profoundly affect the levels of achievement we reach. Learn how to shift
unhelpful beliefs and develop change-making strategies and behaviours that explore the full range of your potential.

3 OVERCOME THE BYSTANDER EFFECT
In challenging situations, ordinary people are often bystanders. Hero Town mobilises this majority for good. The everyday
hero has the mental and practical tools to overcome the power of the situation and take effective action.

Karli is currently has engaged the program at Surf Coast Secondary College and it will be interesting to monitor the
results on the current crop of students.

We wish Karli well in her endeavours with the program.

Brownlow Football Night

Monday 26 September 2016

This is a football themed night so dress in your club colours or dress to impress.  At this stage we haven't arranged a guest speaker
but hopefully you will be entertained for a while at least any way.

This is a partners night so if your partner is not coming please apologise for them by 9am on Monday 26 September 2016 ph 5222 2022.
Please feel free to invite your friends (you just need to remember to book them in).   If you don't apologise for your partner they will
assume to be attending with you.

The final program has not been resolved but it may include an individual trivia challenge to find our very own "football genius" for 2016
(no phones allowed), maybe a green carpet walk for the best dressed and perhaps even a Brownlow tipping contest.

Also if everyone can bring one piece of football memorabilia (or more if you wish) it will add to the event.

We need some football decorations for about 5 tables so if we have any volunteers please let me know or if anyone has any ideas for the
evening please give me a call.

It won't be a late night because we will want to get home to watch the Brownlow.

International Report

OUR INTERNATIONAL WATER PROJECT TAKES OFF IN OCTOBER

You may recall Colin Mc Donald, from RC Benalla, and Janine Koch, RC Geelong East, spoke at our meeting on 21 March 2016 about
the Awake and Shine school in Samthar, India.

Purpose of the project:
To supply clean water to staff and children where currently the children walk to and from school for up to 1½ hours morning and afternoon
but only have approximately 300 ml. of water to drink. There is a high incidence of illness due to lack of water and a high salt diet, with an
apparent number of families and children affected by kidney disease.

This project will provide material for rain water harvesting comprising roof gutters, down pipes and storage tanks to supply clean water for
drinking, cooking and bathing. Recycling of the grey water will be used for toilets, growing vegetables, herbs, laundry, and cattle.

Rotary Club of Torquay partners with Rotary Club of Benalla
After much research and deliberation our board agreed to fund 2 water filters and set aside the amount of $5940 for this major international
project.

I'm pleased to tell you that the Benalla team will leave for India, on 10th October to install the new tanks and filters, so we can all help secure
a healthy future for these children.

ROTARY FOUNDATION FACTS...Did you know...

The Foundation’s assets grew slowly over its first 30 years. At the end of the 1947-48 Rotary year, it had received only about $2 million in contributions since 1917.
Today, the Foundation’s assets stand at more than $1 billion. What led to such a remarkable increase in donations?
It began in 1947, when Paul Harris died after a prolonged illness. Rotary’s beloved founder had told friends that if they wanted to honor him, they should donate to the Foundation. So Rotary established a special fund for the contributions that flooded headquarters as news of Paul’s death spread.

In just 18 months, the Foundation received $1.3 million. Contributions continued to increase over the years, and they first topped $1 million in a single year in 1965.

At the 1978 convention in Tokyo, Rotary announced a two-year 75th anniversary fund, which would receive more than $7.2 million.

In 2004, the Foundation started the Every Rotarian, Every Year campaign to stimulate giving to the Annual Fund, which supports Foundation grants. In 2014-15, that fund received a record $123 million in contributions

Community Fitness Stations ....coming soon
A major project for Torquay Rotary this year is to install several fitness stations on the Torquay foreshore for the benefit of residents and visitors. There will be 4 stations each consisting of 2 elements of equipment. which will be situated on the walking track along the coast between Elephant Walk (near Zeally Bay Rd) and the carpark above the Surf Beach The equipment is currently being manufactured and will be erected prior to summer. Thanks to some generous corporate funding we are on the home stretch but still need more assistance to complete the project. You are invited to help us raise the final $$$$ to get the equipment in the ground
We hope you will support us in this fantastic project by pledging financial support and sharing this post with your friends. CLICK HERE TO HELP

Dinner Meeting Registration & Apologies

MEETING APOLOGIES - What do I do?

Notifying someone about changes to your meeting attendance is your responsibility!

Our meetings have catered dinners, so if you are unable to attend a meeting, or if your partner is unable to attend a designated Partner's Night, YOU MUST ADVISE us of your or your partner’s absence.  This also applies if you are attending the meeting but not dining.

There are two ways to do this, either record the information in advance in the "Apology Book" that is available at the book in table at each meeting or telephone 03-5222-2022.  An answering service operates out of hours.
  • All apologies must be made no later than 9.00AM on the Monday of the meeting (unless other arrangements were addressed in the Bulletin).
  • If no apology is recorded by that time, the absentee member will be issued with an invoice to pay the Club the dinner fee of $25 for your non-attendance, and/or that of your partner if it is an official Partner's Night.

  • On "Partners Nights" it is a different arrangement as it will be assumed that your partner WILL BE attending unless you apologise for them!
Remember if you are bringing guests or your partner (to a non-partner night) you need to notify us of the extra number of persons who will be attending.

Absence when away on travel is not an excuse.  It is your reasonability to lodge your apology and it is recommended that this be recorded beforehand in the “Apology Book” to save you remembering each week whilst you are away.
