The Rotary Club of Torquay has a terrific relationship with Surf Coast Secondary College. We have Liam currently on Youth Exchange, and have had students involved with other Rotary youth programs. Also we have had help at this year’s Motor Show, and a willingness to further assist in future events.
On Monday night, we were very fortunate to have Surf Coast Secondary College Principal Scott Diamond, along with the school captains – Phoebe Markoulis and Bryson West.
Their presentation was ‘hosted’ by Scott asking Bryson and Phoebe a series of questions on themselves, life at Surf Coast Secondary College and their involvement and interests in the community.
Phoebe and Bryson were nominated for school captains due to their ability, willingness and commitment to both the school and community.
At school, both have been members of the Student Voice group – A leadership group mentoring, assisting and motivating fellow students.
In Year 12, there is 35 hours of school plus 15-20 hours of homework per week. With this in mind, Scott asked what else they did in their ‘spare time’.
Both Phoebe and Bryson felt it important to be involved in the local community.
Bryson playing and coaching Hockey, assisting the shire in youth programs including Freeza, the Salvation Army and battle of the bands – which his band won –
Phoebe works at the Quicksilver Café, is also involved in youth programs in the shire, is very involved in the arts program (and would like to promote art more in the community) and music events.
Bryson was awarded the Leadership Award from the Shire and Phoebe was awarded the Arts Award, a great credit to them.
After a Gap year next year, Bryson would like to go and study Out Door Education and return to Surf Coast Secondary College as an Outdoor Ed Teacher.
Phoebe wants to study Fashion Design and P.R at RMIT, with a goal of having her own Fashion Business. Phoebe loves to inspire and motivate people.
With a huge interest in the community and youth – both programs and challenges, Bryson and
Phoebe are keen to pursue a Youth Drop in Centre, where the youth in our community can come to relax, play games, socialize and have councilors available to assist those in need. They are very interested in partnering with local community organisations to ‘make this happen’………
Phoebe and Bryson are keen to remain ‘locals’ be involved the Torquay Community, sporting groups and continue to work with and assist the youth in the area.
They are looking forward to the future and the changes and challenges it will present.
