Bulletin No  23

From the President

At last week's meeting we were entertained by Kathryn and Gerard McNamara with a presentation of their recent tour of Africa with some amazing pics to give a spectacular snapshot of their trip. Many thanks for sharing your journey with all of us who were present.

Rotary Youth Protection and Insurance
As I mentioned on Monday, here is the link to our draft Child Safe Standards. Do please read this carefully and send any comments to Peter Bollen or myself before our next Board meeting on Monday 12 December, as this is when we will officially adopt this standard as Club policy. Once adopted, all members will be required to sign and agree to abide to the Code of Conduct contained within the standard.  Thank you again to Peter for taking on the role of Club Child Protection Officer.

Achievement awards for students in our local primary schools
At our last Board meeting, a number of encouragement awards of $1000 each were approved to be presented as follows:
  • Bellbrae Primary;
  • St Therese Primary School;
  • Torquay College;
  • Surf Coast Secondary College; and
  • $1,500 to the Winchelsea Primary School literacy programme.
Thank you to Chris Sims for all your efforts in liaising with the schools to arrange these awards and in attending each of the five schools to make the presentations to students. This is just one of our many youth activities, and a tangible way in which we assist local young people

Our Christmas party and Christmas gifting
By now I am sure you have responded to the invitation to our Christmas party on Monday 18 December at the Torquay Hotel.  If not, please let Maggie know your intentions as soon as you can.
You are also aware we’re asking you to make a donation to a Rotary project or programme rather than having a Kris Kringle.  One way to do this is to go to the Rotary website rotary Give - https://www.rotary.org/en/give and make your donation online.
Alternatively, you might like to use this form and give it to Treasurer Graham along with your cheque of donation into our fund Raising account:

Youth Report

RYLA DISTRICT 9780

Rotary Youth Leadership Award 2016 – 17

Call for Applications from Clubs for Attendance

Rotary Youth Leadership Award, or RYLA, is an inspiring and challenging personal development and leadership program for young people 18 to 25 years old.

At RYLA young people develop their leadership potential, set goals for their future, challenge themselves personally, and have an amazing time with about 50 other great people their age.

The role of the District 9780 Rotary Clubs is to identify potential candidates and to support their attendance financially. There is a nomination fee of $550.00 for each attendee, payable by the Rotary Club

The 2017 Camp is to be held at “Kangaroobie” near Princetown, Victoria from 8th April 2017 to April 13th 2017. Attendees must be between 18 and 25 at the time of the camp – there are no exceptions.

Applications close with the District 9780 RYLA Committee on 16th December 2016 and members of the Rotary Club of Torquay are invited to nominate candidates for the 2017 camp in sufficient time to meet the District deadline of 16th December 2016. In the past the Rotary Club of Torquay has sponsored two candidates.

The camp provides a unique experience in helping young people maximise their potential and many Rylarians have described RYLA as a life changing experience.

For Application Forms please contact Chris Sims on 0439 209 036 or by e-mail on

chrissims@netspace.net.au I would suggest that Torquay Rotarians move swiftly in order to comply with the District deadline.

Tracking Trevor

Hi Rotarians,

Earlier this year I decided to sail my 9.4m Noelex 30 across to Tasmania. Originally I thought of having some of my regular crew but that was before I heard Jessica Watson talking at our Club about her solo voyage around the world. I asked if she would sign my copy of her book then I asked her how hard would it be to sail solo across Bass Strait. She was so encouraging and after a long chat I decided that it really is not so onerous.

I read all the literature about solo sailing particularly in Australian waters and spoke to a few Noelex owners who have crossed the ditch. Ben, who moors his yacht next to mine has a 10m ketch and he has circumnavigated Tassie several times single handed. He was a great help in checking all my safety equipment.

Almost everything is now ready for the big trip. A few things yet to sort out such as fixing a torn dodger and a bent pulpit, but most of the important stuff is ready. Boxing day is 3 weeks away, I hope I have 3 days of fair weather at that time.

I thought it may be fun for my friends and family to be able to follow me on my 3 day quest. My ever vigilant daughter Louise told me it was not for fun but a mandatory requirement, so I have organized the following.

If you want to follow my progress there are two options.

1-  I borrowed a GPS tracking devise which you can all log into if you like. I turned it on for a trial run yesterday during the race and was impressed by its simplicity and the information which I could download. It takes readings every 10mins and stores it in the cloud. Let me know if you have trouble looking at this.

FindmeSpot

2-   I also have a tracking app on my iPad which is working well so far. It may not work in Bass Strait without using the Telstra towers but I have no way of checking? Anyhow, go to followmee.com and login using my details. (note "ee" in followmee)
User name = fleurieuwarrior    password = myyacht

Have fun and please send me any feedback.

Depending on the weather we hope to sail out of Launceston about the 3rd or 4th Jan. I say "we" because Ken Beall (Canada) and his step-son Tony (completed four Sydney-Hobarts) are sailing with me. I'll also have the tracker on for the return trip.

Trevor

The Road Home Project

The Road Home – a project to end homelessness locally
A House refers to a building in which someone lives. A home refers to any location that a person thinks of as the place where they live
and that belongs to them.

To end an episode of homelessness a person needs a house, to end the cycle of homelessness a person needs a home.
The Road Home aims to raise awareness of homelessness and to provide means to assist people to turn a house into a home, by
providing dignity, warmth and identity to people experiencing homelessness.
To achieve this result, the Road Home is working with other services and initiatives to best facilitate the distribution of blankets and
hygiene products to ensure that people that are experiencing homelessness have access to the basic essential items that we all utilise
on a regular basis.
Between April and September we will be conducting a collection of these Bedding and Hygiene items from many Businesses and
Organisations throughout Geelong and wish to ask you if you are interested in volunteering to collect these items on our behalf in
your local area, we will collect them from you and distribute to the service agencies.
The Road Home project will be holding individual events on a bi-monthly basis in an effort to continue to raise awareness behind
a person becoming Homeless and giving them support.
We are organizing a car sleep out for December, please let me know if you are interested in helping with this.
Also we will be holding a Dinner with presentations from many Geelong services that support those experiencing homelessness in
Late March or early April 2017 and wish to know if you are interested in attending.
Finally another Big aim is to combine forces with other like-minded groups and create a shelter in Geelong for those who have no
home to go to.
Please reply and advise if you are interested in supporting this ongoing project in any way you can.

Yours Sincerely

Dinner Meeting Registration & Apologies

MEETING APOLOGIES - What do I do?

Notifying someone about changes to your meeting attendance is your responsibility!

Our meetings have catered dinners, so if you are unable to attend a meeting, or if your partner is unable to attend a designated Partner's Night, YOU MUST ADVISE us of your or your partner’s absence.  This also applies if you are attending the meeting but not dining.

There are two ways to do this, either record the information in advance in the "Apology Book" that is available at the book in table at each meeting or telephone 03-5222-2022.  An answering service operates out of hours.
  • All apologies must be made no later than 9.00AM on the Monday of the meeting (unless other arrangements were addressed in the Bulletin).
  • If no apology is recorded by that time, the absentee member will be issued with an invoice to pay the Club the dinner fee of $25 for your non-attendance, and/or that of your partner if it is an official Partner's Night.

  • On "Partners Nights" it is a different arrangement as it will be assumed that your partner WILL BE attending unless you apologise for them!
Remember if you are bringing guests or your partner (to a non-partner night) you need to notify us of the extra number of persons who will be attending.

Absence when away on travel is not an excuse.  It is your reasonability to lodge your apology and it is recommended that this be recorded beforehand in the “Apology Book” to save you remembering each week whilst you are away.
