Bulletin No  19

From the President

AGM – Monday 21 November
Just a reminder that we are holding our AGM on Monday 21 November and the request from President Elect Gaynor for your expressions of interest in Board positions and in the role of President Elect 2017-2018 and therefore President 2018-2019.  I really do ask you consider seriously your interest in this vital role for the Club.

Group 9 & 10 Presidents’ Meeting
This week I attended a meeting of Group 9 and 10 Presidents, along with District Governor Stephen, and Assistant Governors Ross and Kathy.  Here are some of the key points of discussion on which I welcome your thoughts and offers to assist or get involved:

Centenary of the Rotary Foundation
DG Stephen highlighted the 100th birthday of our Foundation and the hope that all clubs will celebrate this milestone.  Most clubs are planning an event or a project – I highlighted our plans for The Rotary Foundation Centenary Youth Talent Show, in conjunction with Surf Coast Secondary College.

Update on the Ice Fight initiative – PP Ian Campbell, Highton RC
The Highton Community Service committee is working with the Geelong Community Drug Action Group (GCDAG) and seeks assistance from Clubs to develop our community response to this illicit drug problem. Rotary is uniquely placed to provide this community input and support in many ways, one of which is to join GCDAG.  If you are interested in joining this committee please contact PP Ian Campbell on 0408-082-514 or imckc@optusnet.com.au if you have experience and/or skills to offer for this very important fight.

RYDA – Rotary Youth Driver Awareness
RYDA is an award winning road safety program which has been presented to over 500,000 Year 11 and 12 students focusing on student attitudes and behavior with the aim of making them safer drivers and passengers. The first program in Geelong ran on 11 August 2016 with 5 schools attending.
RYDA needs to be a true joint project of all Geelong Rotary Clubs, so we are encouraged to appoint members to attend RYDA committee meetings, join the RYDA committee &/or at least be a point of contact for RYDA in our Club.
We’re also asked to consider an annual contribution of $200 to the local RYDA committee to run the program.

Shine on Awards – part of the vocational Avenue of Service
  • Shine On is organised by the Southern Districts Committee and recognises outstanding service to the local and wider communities by persons with a disability.
  • Entrants are accepted via nomination.
  • An Expert Individual Panel selects the nominees.
  • An Event is hosted by a Rotary Club where citations are read and awards and certificates presented.
We are encouraged to select a member of our Vocational Committee to act as contact person and promote the event.

Happy 60th Mal Slater

Friday Night a small group of friends and family gathered to celebrate our great friend and Rotarian Mal Slater's 60th Birthday. So on behalf of our Club HAPPY BIRTHDAY MAL

But for me the highlight of this celebration was that I finally had the opportunity to meet a person of whom I had heard so much throughout my 14 years in our Club, Mindy Elofson, and her Husband Wade. It almost felt like I had known Mindy for the 18 years it has been since she spent her Exchange year with our Club such is the impression that she made on the families who hosted all those years ago when she arrived here as a very young 15year old Exchange Student.  Friendships so strong that some of these host families (the Slaters and Reeds) travelled to Canada for Mindy and Wades wedding a few years ago. Since then Mindy and wade have settled in Queensland and were able to travel to Bellbrae to celebrate Mals 60th with him. What I see in Mindy and these friendships is the reason why I know many, many Rotarians continue to make the effort to support the Youth Exchange Program.

RYLA DISTRICT 9780

Rotary Youth Leadership Award 2016 – 17

Call for Applications from Clubs for Attendance

Rotary Youth Leadership Award, or RYLA, is an inspiring and challenging personal development and leadership program for young people 18 to 25 years old.

At RYLA young people develop their leadership potential, set goals for their future, challenge themselves personally, and have an amazing time with about 50 other great people their age.

The role of the District 9780 Rotary Clubs is to identify potential candidates and to support their attendance financially. There is a nomination fee of $550.00 for each attendee, payable by the Rotary Club

The 2017 Camp is to be held at “Kangaroobie” near Princetown, Victoria from 8th April 2017 to April 13th 2017. Attendees must be between 18 and 25 at the time of the camp – there are no exceptions.

Applications close with the District 9780 RYLA Committee on 16th December 2016 and members of the Rotary Club of Torquay are invited to nominate candidates for the 2017 camp in sufficient time to meet the District deadline of 16th December 2016. In the past the Rotary Club of Torquay has sponsored two candidates.

The camp provides a unique experience in helping young people maximise their potential and many Rylarians have described RYLA as a life changing experience.

For Application Forms please contact Chris Sims on 0439 209 036 or by e-mail on

chrissims@netspace.net.au I would suggest that Torquay Rotarians move swiftly in order to comply with the District deadline.

Little Blue Towels

Single-use hospital towels usually destined for landfill are finding a second life in a nifty social enterprise giving work to people with disabilities and raising money for charity.
Hundreds of thousands of blue cotton towels are used by hospital theatre staff throughout Australia each year to dry their hands after scrubbing up with disinfectant prior to surgery.
After a single-use the towels they are thrown away.
Unit manager of the perioperative unit at Echuca Regional Health, Tricia Burke, said in her 30 years of nursing she had seen the hospital environment become increasingly reliant upon disposable items.
"We used to wash all of our sheets and we did it mainly onsite — the modern hospital is a huge landfill issue these days," she said.
She estimates the regional hospital in Echuca use about 100 to 150 towels per week, a relatively small amount compared to a large metropolitan hospital.

"We have made a huge impact on the environment in just our hospitals alone," Ms Burke said.
After being approached with the idea of recycling their surgical towels for charity by Echuca local Dick Phillips, who was introduced to the idea by anaesthetist, Dr David Hays, the hospital came onboard.
There are now 12 hospitals throughout regional Victoria and southern NSW and 12 in Melbourne that are part of the Little Blue Towels project, with all proceeds of sales going to the OTIS Foundation, which provide no cost retreat accommodation to people living with breast cancer.
'Exceeded all of our expectations'

At the heart of the project is a small laundry business in Echuca that prepares all the towels from across the state.
This unique company, Laundry Mates, is an enterprise wholly owned and operated by people with disabilities, who are all shareholders in the company.
Coordinating supervisor Dianne Smith said the enterprise came about through disability support provider Echuca Discoveries, whose clients expressed an interest in being part of the workforce.
"They actually wanted to be out there working for themselves with the intention of getting an income," she said.
Ms Smith said initially it was a steep learning curve for the shareholders, many of whom did not have any prior skills in washing or ironing, but they took on the challenge.
"They've exceeded all of our expectations they've taken to it with great gusto. They absolutely love what they're doing and take a lot of pride in their work," Ms Smith said.
In addition to servicing their clientele, mainly in the hospitality industries, Laundry Mates launder on average about 2,000 blue surgical towels per week.
They also do some packing, but unable to meet the demand have enlisted the support of community organisation Radius in Bendigo to do the bulk of the packaging.

Enthusiastic about the task
On the top floor of the recently re-furbished Morley Building in Bendigo, 10 people in a supported employment program sit and pack the towels to be ready for sale.
The group of people with disabilities are from community organisation Radius who, along with volunteers and mentor Stephen Rynhart, make sure the towels are neatly packaged ready for distribution across the state.
"The team is working very effectively and they enjoy the work," engagement manager at Radius Simone Baker said.
The operation runs four-days-per-week, with most people working two days in a roster.
Sam Thompson, who has been involved with the project for the last few weeks, said he found the folding "pretty complicated" but was "enthusiastic" about the task.

Myriad of uses and ideas
According to Mr Phillips, the 100 per cent cotton towels have a range of uses from cleaning to golf towels.
He said they could even be useful for holding fish prior to releasing them back into the water, according to catch and release best practice.
With more hospitals coming on board, Mr Philips is hoping he can find a suitable service in Melbourne to handle some of the metropolitan laundering to save on transport.
"If that could happen that would be fantastic and would certainly increase our processing capacity," he said.
Back at Echuca hospital Ms Burke said the project had inspired staff to think about other ways of recycling, after two staff returned from an environmental sustainability study day in Melbourne.
"This has opened up a whole myriad of ideas," she said.

Towels can be purchased from Affordable Cleaning Supplies, 32A Gordon Avenue Geelong West

The Road Home Project

The Road Home – a project to end homelessness locally
A House refers to a building in which someone lives. A home refers to any location that a person thinks of as the place where they live
and that belongs to them.

To end an episode of homelessness a person needs a house, to end the cycle of homelessness a person needs a home.
The Road Home aims to raise awareness of homelessness and to provide means to assist people to turn a house into a home, by
providing dignity, warmth and identity to people experiencing homelessness.
To achieve this result, the Road Home is working with other services and initiatives to best facilitate the distribution of blankets and
hygiene products to ensure that people that are experiencing homelessness have access to the basic essential items that we all utilise
on a regular basis.
Between April and September we will be conducting a collection of these Bedding and Hygiene items from many Businesses and
Organisations throughout Geelong and wish to ask you if you are interested in volunteering to collect these items on our behalf in
your local area, we will collect them from you and distribute to the service agencies.
The Road Home project will be holding individual events on a bi-monthly basis in an effort to continue to raise awareness behind
a person becoming Homeless and giving them support.
We are organizing a car sleep out for December, please let me know if you are interested in helping with this.
Also we will be holding a Dinner with presentations from many Geelong services that support those experiencing homelessness in
Late March or early April 2017 and wish to know if you are interested in attending.
Finally another Big aim is to combine forces with other like-minded groups and create a shelter in Geelong for those who have no
home to go to.
Please reply and advise if you are interested in supporting this ongoing project in any way you can.

Yours Sincerely

Dinner Meeting Registration & Apologies

MEETING APOLOGIES - What do I do?

Notifying someone about changes to your meeting attendance is your responsibility!

Our meetings have catered dinners, so if you are unable to attend a meeting, or if your partner is unable to attend a designated Partner's Night, YOU MUST ADVISE us of your or your partner’s absence.  This also applies if you are attending the meeting but not dining.

There are two ways to do this, either record the information in advance in the "Apology Book" that is available at the book in table at each meeting or telephone 03-5222-2022.  An answering service operates out of hours.
  • All apologies must be made no later than 9.00AM on the Monday of the meeting (unless other arrangements were addressed in the Bulletin).
  • If no apology is recorded by that time, the absentee member will be issued with an invoice to pay the Club the dinner fee of $25 for your non-attendance, and/or that of your partner if it is an official Partner's Night.

  • On "Partners Nights" it is a different arrangement as it will be assumed that your partner WILL BE attending unless you apologise for them!
Remember if you are bringing guests or your partner (to a non-partner night) you need to notify us of the extra number of persons who will be attending.

Absence when away on travel is not an excuse.  It is your reasonability to lodge your apology and it is recommended that this be recorded beforehand in the “Apology Book” to save you remembering each week whilst you are away.
